{"id":40035,"date":"2024-11-15T00:01:03","date_gmt":"2024-11-15T00:01:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=40035"},"modified":"2024-11-14T13:32:43","modified_gmt":"2024-11-14T13:32:43","slug":"dcf-summarises-progress-of-uk-telecoms-operators-toward-net-zero","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/11\/dcf-summarises-progress-of-uk-telecoms-operators-toward-net-zero.html","title":{"rendered":"DCF Summarises Progress of UK Telecoms Operators Toward Net Zero"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new report from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.connectivityuk.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Connectivity Forum<\/a> (DCF), which is an industry think-tank for the Government, has summarised how much progress the UK telecoms (broadband, mobile etc.) market has made with respect to sustainability and Net Zero (i.e. the goal of an organisation to remove as many carbon emissions as they produce) &#8211; with nearly all of the major operators having set targets.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The report, which surveyed 12 major telecoms companies during May 2024 (e.g. network operators, ISPs and vendors), revealed that 11 out of 12 have set some form of <strong>Net Zero<\/strong> target and 75% are using validated science-based targets. This level of target setting was found to be both a &#8220;<em>positive signal of the continued commitment to net zero and a sign that the telecoms sector is recognising and responding to climate concerns<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> The DCF\u2019s sponsors are: Allpoints Fibre, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bbc\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>, Cellnex, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/cityfibre\" target=\"_blank\">CityFibre<\/a>, Cornerstone, DSIT (Gov), Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited, Ericsson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fibrus\" target=\"_blank\">Fibrus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/gigaclear\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Gigaclear<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/hyperopticfibre\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Hyperoptic<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/nexfibre\" target=\"_blank\">NexFibre<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a>, Sky, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a>, TechUK, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a>, Vorboss and the Wireless Infrastructure Group.<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Other key findings included:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u27a4 70% identified renewable energy transition as the largest driver for operational emissions decrease to date.<br \/>\n\u27a4 5 out of 11 identified fleet transition as a potential large-scale driver for scope 1 &amp; 2 reductions.<br \/>\n\u27a4 50% have fleet transition targets.<br \/>\n\u27a4 90% identified green skills gaps as a barrier.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The report also highlights interesting areas such as the potential for certain drivers to decrease overall emissions, including fleet transition, renewable energy switching, fluorinated gas reduction from networks and data centres, and the use of data analytics to focus sustainability strategy. But unfortunately, we only get small bits and pieces of data from the report, and it doesn&#8217;t compare the progress of each company, which would have been useful.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Will Ennett, Chair of the DCF&#8217;s Climate &amp; Sustainability Work Group, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe members of the Digital Connectivity Forum Climate and Sustainability Working Group have recognised the urgency of climate change.
