{"id":41136,"date":"2025-03-08T18:06:31","date_gmt":"2025-03-08T18:06:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=41136"},"modified":"2025-03-08T18:12:13","modified_gmt":"2025-03-08T18:12:13","slug":"strategic-shift-as-bt-no-longer-being-ditched-as-uk-consumer-brand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/strategic-shift-as-bt-no-longer-being-ditched-as-uk-consumer-brand.html","title":{"rendered":"Strategic Shift as BT No Longer Being Ditched as UK Consumer Brand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Broadband and telecoms giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> appears to have confirmed that their strategy of turning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> into the group&#8217;s \u201c<em>flagship brand for our consumer customers<\/em>\u201d, which was eventually expected to result in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> brand focusing more on business customers, will no longer result in the original brand being retired for consumer products.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Just to recap. Back in April 2022 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> Group announced a significant and surprising change in their branding strategy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/04\/bt-group-turning-ee-into-its-flagship-brand-for-uk-consumers.html\">here<\/a>), which sought simplification (i.e. no more having \u201c<em>two of everything<\/em>\u201c) by turning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> into their \u201c<em>flagship brand<\/em>\u201d for most consumer customers, while BT would become the main brand for their Enterprise and Global units. In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/plusnetuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Plusnet<\/a> would have continued to \u201c<em>serve customers with basic no-frills broadband and landline<\/em>\u201d (although they&#8217;ve opted not to offer landline phone services on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Since then there have been a series of gradual moves to help facilitate this transition (e.g. product changes and withdrawals), although we&#8217;ve long questioned the wisdom of the operator&#8217;s approach, particularly given that the BT brand was already synonymous with home broadband and phone services. Instead, BT&#8217;s efforts to foster brand simplification always seemed destined to fuel consumer confusion.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2025\/03\/08\/bt-brand-saved-amid-pressure-billionaire-indian-investor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Telegraph<\/a> (paywall), the CEO of BT Group, <strong>Allison Kirkby<\/strong>, has now &#8220;<em>shelved<\/em>&#8221; the original re-branding strategy &#8220;<em>amid concerns that dropping the historic brand risked alienating older customers<\/em>&#8221; (this seems like a reference to their older standalone broadband and landline-only base).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>A Spokesperson for BT said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> is our lead consumer-facing brand for converged mobile and broadband customers but there will always be a big role for BT as one of our most highly valued brands by our customers. BT will therefore continue as part of our portfolio of well-loved consumer brands alongside EE and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/plusnetuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Plusnet<\/a>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The report also indicates that BT will &#8220;<em>step up its investment<\/em>&#8221; in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/plusnetuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Plusnet<\/a>, which seems odd given how much they&#8217;ve gutted from that service in recent years (mobile, TV, home phone etc.). But despite this, the report indicates that BT may be preparing to launch a new budget focused mobile service in the future, although it&#8217;s unclear if this will be done under Plusnet or a completely new brand.<\/p>\n<p>On the one hand, we agree that the BT brand should be retained for consumer services, particularly broadband and phone. On the other hand, we&#8217;ve just spent 2-3 years on the process of transitioning consumers over to EE, and to change course now seems likely to fuel yet more confusion.
