{"id":4117,"date":"2013-09-13T12:15:36","date_gmt":"2013-09-13T11:15:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=4117"},"modified":"2013-10-16T10:44:26","modified_gmt":"2013-10-16T09:44:26","slug":"ofcom-uk-prep-auction-2-3ghz-3-4ghz-4g-mobile-broadband","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/09\/ofcom-uk-prep-auction-2-3ghz-3-4ghz-4g-mobile-broadband.html","title":{"rendered":"UPD Ofcom UK Prep Auction of 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz for 4G Mobile Broadband"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has today confirmed that the national UK telecoms regulator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>, will be taking over responsibility for the forthcoming sale of its former 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz radio spectrum bands for use by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> based Mobile Broadband services.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The spectrum, which includes 40MHz in the <strong>2.3GHz<\/strong> band (between 2350MHz and 2390MHz) and 150MHz above <strong>3.4GHz<\/strong> (between 3410MHz and 3600MHz), was formerly used for &#8220;<em>military purposes<\/em>&#8221; but it\u2019s now being harmonised by Europe for use with civilian Mobile Broadband technology and is &#8220;<em>therefore likely to be used for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> services<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>However it&#8217;s worth pointing out that, following an auction by one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>\u2019s predecessor regulatory bodies, the RadioCommunications Agency, similar spectrum between 3480 and 3500MHz and between 3580 and 3600MHz is already under licence for civil use by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ukbroadband.com\" target=\"_blank\">UK Broadband<\/a> (PCCW), which has since launched it its own fixed wireless <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> network in places like<strong> Scunthorpe<\/strong> and <strong>Swindon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> said that a new document seeking expressions of interest from potential users of this spectrum would shortly be published on their website (<a href=\"http:\/\/stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk\/spectrum\/public-sector-spectrum-release\/?utm_source=updates&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=mod-spectrum-release\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 16th October 2003<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The document has now been published (<a href=\"http:\/\/stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk\/consultations\/2.3-3.4-ghz\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has today confirmed that the national UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, will be taking over responsibility for the forthcoming sale of its former 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz radio spectrum bands for use by 4G based Mobile Broadband services.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[61,60,36],"class_list":["post-4117","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-4g","tag-mobile-broadband","tag-ofcom-regulation"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
