{"id":4130,"date":"2013-09-17T10:49:08","date_gmt":"2013-09-17T09:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=4130"},"modified":"2013-09-17T16:24:19","modified_gmt":"2013-09-17T15:24:19","slug":"wales-uk-replace-broadband-support-scheme-near-identical-alternative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/09\/wales-uk-replace-broadband-support-scheme-near-identical-alternative.html","title":{"rendered":"Wales UK Replace Broadband Support Scheme with Similar Alternative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/wales.gov.uk\/?lang=en\" target=\"_new\">Welsh Government<\/a> has announced that its \u00a34 million <a href=\"http:\/\/wales.gov.uk\/topics\/businessandeconomy\/broadbandandict\/broadband\/bbss\/;jsessionid=dX8CPvQM0T5G3D2sCrrp39JTzgK7XW8QGr8YvLP2NN7vyHNqQ8j2!-351825548?lang=en\" target=\"_new\">Broadband Support Scheme<\/a> (BSS), which offered grants of up to \u00a31,000 to help those living in rural parts of <strong>Wales<\/strong> where broadband connectivity remains poor (i.e. sub-2Mbps speeds), is to be replaced by an almost identical alternative.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The new scheme, called <strong>Access Broadband Cymru<\/strong> (ABC), is expected to be introduced from <strong>1st October 2013<\/strong> and includes more than a passing similarity to the old setup. For example, it will also provide grants of up to <strong>\u00a31,000 per premise<\/strong> in areas which have &#8220;<em>slow broadband connections<\/em>&#8221; (i.e. consistently sub-2Mbps downloads).<\/p>\n<p>The key difference appears to be that ABC is designed to complement the wider <a href=\"http:\/\/www.superfast-wales.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Superfast Cymru<\/strong><\/a> project and will thus only be usable in areas where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>\/BDUK&#8217;s fibre broadband (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>\/P) rollout won&#8217;t cover or where no date has been published for improved connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>As a quick reminder, the Superfast Cymru project aims to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s fibre optic based broadband (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>\/P) network available to 96% of Welsh premises by the end of <strong>spring 2016<\/strong>. As a result ABC is expected to focus on the last 4%.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Ken Skates, Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>While Superfast Cymru continues to make excellent progress in connecting Wales\u2019 homes and businesses, we want to ensure that all of our communities are able to enjoy the benefits of improved connectivity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>That\u2019s why we\u2019re introducing this grant scheme and, in doing so, providing essential support to individuals, businesses, third sector organisations and communities who are struggling with slow broadband speeds.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A grant of up to \u00a31,000 per premise really will make that difference and open the door to so many opportunities that just aren\u2019t available if you don\u2019t have a good quality, fast broadband connection<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/welshgov\" target=\"_blank\">Welsh Government<\/a> states that its new scheme will be open until <strong>31st March 2016<\/strong>, which roughly aligns with the expected completion for Superfast Cymru, and that those seeking to apply for it can find out more information by going here: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wales.gov.uk\/broadband\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.wales.gov.uk\/broadband<\/a>.
