But the operator has granted him 1.8 million deferred shares, plus another 800,000 as a bonus, which is worth close to \u00a39 million.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The operators remuneration committee felt it was &#8220;<em>appropriate for Ian to receive the above shares given the major contribution he has made to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>\u2019s turnaround in recent years, which has seen the company\u2019s share price rise in recent days to a twelve year high<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the new CEO, <strong>Gavin Patterson<\/strong>, will initially receive a <strong>base salary of \u00a3925,000<\/strong>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> said, &#8220;<em>continues to be positioned in the lower half of the pay range for CEOs of companies of a similar size<\/em>&#8220;. But Patterson&#8217;s CEO bonus has been restructured to mean that his short-term bonuses will be smaller but the long-term rewards for &#8220;<em>\u2018on target\u2019 performance<\/em>&#8221; could be significantly higher.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Sir Michael Rake, Chairman of BT, added: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Ian has done a wonderful job for BT and so this is clearly reward for success. BT is a far healthier company than it was when he took over as CEO and I am confident it will continue to thrive under Gavin\u2019s leadership. We have some tremendous foundations to build on now and there are exciting times ahead<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy for an ordinary person on the street to view such payments with envy, anger and or perhaps even jealousy. But in fairness even Livingston&#8217;s \u00a39 million pay-out is nothing compared to the former CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>, <strong>Neil Berkett<\/strong>, who walked away with around \u00a313.2m in cash and stocks plus a \u201c<em>long-term incentive plan<\/em>\u201d that amounted to around \u00a345.2m (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/03\/outgoing-virgin-media-ceo-gets-gbp58m-payday-via-liberty-global-sale.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Now let&#8217;s not forget that these are individuals who run big commercial companies that employ thousands and thousands of people right across the country and add billions to the economy each year. Contrast that with Footballers, for example, Spanish club Real Madrid&#8217;s payment of around <strong>\u00a386 Million<\/strong> for ex-Tottenham Hotspur player <strong>Gareth Bale<\/strong> (Cristiano Ronaldo was only worth \u00a380m by comparison.. poor poor fella).
