{"id":41901,"date":"2025-05-27T12:10:14","date_gmt":"2025-05-27T11:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=41901"},"modified":"2025-05-27T12:14:23","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T11:14:23","slug":"ofcom-propose-to-boost-starlinks-uk-satellite-broadband-with-e-band","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/05\/ofcom-propose-to-boost-starlinks-uk-satellite-broadband-with-e-band.html","title":{"rendered":"Ofcom Propose to Boost Starlink&#8217;s UK Satellite Broadband with E Band"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK telecoms regulator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>, has today proposed to grant SpaceX&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/starlink\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a> service &#8220;<em>temporary authorisation<\/em>&#8221; to harness the E band frequencies for their mega constellation of compact ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The move would expand their backhaul capacity at three gateway earth station sites within the UK.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At present <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/starlink\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a> has around <a href=\"https:\/\/planet4589.org\/space\/con\/star\/stats.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>7,580 satellites<\/strong><\/a> in Low Earth Orbit (c.3,880 are v2 Mini \/ GEN 2A) \u2013 mostly at altitudes of c.500-600km \u2013 and they\u2019ll add thousands more by the end of 2027. Residential customers in the UK typically pay from \u00a375 a month, plus \u00a3299 for hardware on the \u2018<em>Standard<\/em>\u2019 unlimited data plan (currently free in some areas on a 12-month term), which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starlink.com\/legal\/documents\/DOC-1400-28829-70\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">promises<\/a> latency times of 25-60ms, downloads of 25-100Mbps and uploads of 5-10Mbps.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> By the end of 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/starlink\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a>\u2019s global network had 4.6 million customers (up from 2.3m in 2023) and 87,000 of those were in the UK (up from 42,000 in 2023) \u2013 mostly in rural areas.<\/div>\n<p>However, Starlink&#8217;s growing network is in need of new capacity to support its expansion, which has resulted in the company requesting temporary authorisation to use <strong>E band<\/strong> (<strong>71-76GHz<\/strong> and <strong>81-86GHz<\/strong>) spectrum at three of its existing gateway sites: <strong>Morn Hill<\/strong> (Hampshire), <strong>Wherstead<\/strong> (Suffolk) and <strong>Woodwalton<\/strong> (Cambridgeshire).<\/p>\n<p>The regulator has today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/spectrum\/space-and-satellites\/consultation-proposal-to-grant-temporary-licences-to-starlink-services-llc-to-use-71-76-ghz-and-81-86-ghz-for-ngso-gateway-earth-stations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed<\/a> to grant these temporary authorisations, which would expire on 31st December 2028. But they would be subject to some technical conditions in order to protect existing uses for Fixed Service and the Earth Exploration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">Satellite<\/a> Service (passive).<\/p>\n<p>The reason for this being only a temporary measure is because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> are still in the process of developing their plans for making spectrum in the Q, V and E bands available for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">satellite<\/a> gateways. But given Starlink&#8217;s request for the spectrum, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> has decided to phase this work, although they still plan to consult on the longer-term authorisation of gateways in E band in 2028 &#8211; following the next World Radiocommunication Conference in 2027 (WRC-27). The regulator also still intends to make the Q\/V bands available for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">satellite<\/a> gateways and they&#8217;ll consult on that in Q2 2025\/6.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>We consider that, subject to these conditions, issuing these licences on a temporary basis should not unduly affect other services using E band and adjacent frequencies<\/em>,&#8221; said Ofcom&#8217;s statement. The proposal is currently subject to consultation until 27th June 2025.
