The Welsh Government<\/a> has today announced that another 151 towns and villages in Wales will get access to BT<\/a>’s fibre broadband (FTTC<\/a>\/P) network by spring 2015 (covering 206,000 premises). The new areas join 120 communities that have already been announced (here<\/a>) for upgrades by spring 2014.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Combined both the first (2013\/4) and second (2015) phases should reach 480,000 premises<\/strong> and thus extend the overall availability of FTTC<\/a>\/P services to “around<\/em>” 75% of Welsh homes and business.<\/p>\n

The state aid supported Superfast Cymru<\/a> project ultimately aims to make broadband speeds of up to 80Mbps available to 96% of Welsh premises by the end of spring 2016 (though we don’t know how many will actually get speeds of 25Mbps+).<\/p>\n

Ed Hunt, BT<\/a> Programme Director for Superfast Cymru, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“We are making great progress, passing on average more than 5,000 premises a week with fibre broadband between now and the end of March 2015. Through this programme we expect to reach close to half a million by spring 2015 with a year still to go. That\u2019s a third of all homes and businesses in Wales, and three quarters when combined with BT<\/a>\u2019s own commercial roll-out<\/em>.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The new communities announced today are predominantly in Caerphilly, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire, Powys and Wrexham.<\/p>\n
