{"id":42199,"date":"2025-06-25T13:20:26","date_gmt":"2025-06-25T12:20:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=42199"},"modified":"2025-07-03T17:05:54","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T16:05:54","slug":"openreach-summarises-new-onts-for-uk-fttp-broadband-lines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/06\/openreach-summarises-new-onts-for-uk-fttp-broadband-lines.html","title":{"rendered":"Openreach Summarises New ONTs for UK FTTP Broadband Lines UPDATE2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Network access provider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>) has published a new Suppliers Information Note (SIN) for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) broadband ISP lines, which provides an updated summary of all their old, existing and future Optical Network Terminal (ONT) modems that they&#8217;ve deployed or intent to deploy. Two new suppliers &#8211; Zyxel and Sercomm &#8211; are also mentioned.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The ONT or optical modem device is usually installed inside your home or office (wall hung), near to where the fibre optic cable physically enters your property, and its primary job is simply to take the optical signal and convert it into an electrical one that can be connected to your broadband router via a Local Area Network (Ethernet) port.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a>\u2019s full fibre network currently covers around 19 million premises and is expected to reach 25 million by December 2026 (80%+ of the UK) \u2013 at a cost of up to \u00a315bn. After that, they hold an ambition to reach up to 30 million by 2030.<\/div>\n<p>The standard ONT is usually a very small single port device, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> also offer Multi-Port variants. Most of these have, thus far, been designed to cope with Openreach&#8217;s existing <strong>Gigabit Passive Optical Network<\/strong> (GPON) based network. But the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openreach.co.uk\/cpportal\/content\/dam\/cpportal\/public\/images-and-documents\/home\/help-and-support\/sins\/documents\/SIN_506B_Optical_Network_Terminals_ONT_v1_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>SIN 506B<\/strong><\/a> document lists newer models, which will also work alongside their latest 10Gbps capable XGS-PON technology (the \u2018X\u2019 stands for 10, the \u2018G\u2019 for Gigabits\u2019 and the \u2018S\u2019 for Symmetric speed).<\/p>\n<p>As we&#8217;ve previously reported (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/05\/openreach-doc-hints-at-xgs-pon-fttp-plan-for-3-3gbps-uk-broadband.html\">here<\/a>), Openreach&#8217;s future XGS-PON trial appears to be gearing up to support symmetric speeds of up to 3.3Gbps (3,300Mbps), so it&#8217;s not surprising that they might need to support that with new ONTs from Nokia, Adtran, Sercomm (new supplier) and Zyxel (new supplier). But we should point out that most of the listed kit supports speeds of up to 1Gbps or 2.5Gbps (faster ONTs will come later). Check out the document for more details.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" style=\"padding: 0px; width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2025-article-illustrations\/Openreach-FTTP-ONT-Hardware-Summary-June-2025.webp\" alt=\"Openreach-FTTP-ONT-Hardware-Summary-June-2025\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 1:54pm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to one of our readers, nsmhd, for pointing out that the Nokia XS-010-X-Q and Adtran SDX-631 do support up to 10Gbps speeds. We didn&#8217;t spot that first time around because Openreach&#8217;s current document doesn&#8217;t include the full specifications for those two models.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 3rd July 2025 @ 5pm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Openreach has released an updated version of the 506B SIN document (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.openreach.co.uk\/cpportal\/content\/dam\/cpportal\/public\/images-and-documents\/home\/help-and-support\/sins\/documents\/Optical_Network_Terminals_ONTs_v1_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">v1.1<\/a>), which addresses a couple of errors and has also now removed reference to the two XGS-PON based ONTs (Adtran SDX631 and Nokia XS-010X-Q) as they are not yet launched \/ covered by a SIN doc.
