UK ISP TalkTalk<\/a> has today announced the launch of a new “HomeMove Squad<\/em>“, which as the name suggests reflects a dedicated team of “Wi-Fi moving experts<\/em>” that can provide a single point of contact, simplifying the process of transferring services and ensuring customers are connected from day one in their new home.<\/p>\n

According to a new online survey of 2,000 UK adults who have moved home and have Wi-Fi, which was conducted during late July 2025 and commissioned by Axicom on behalf of TalkTalk<\/a>, some two-thirds of home movers allegedly consider that not having Wi-Fi on Day One of their move is considered the most stressful part of the entire process.<\/p>\n

The average home mover also faces six days without internet after moving into their new home, and 26% say they endure over a week in the digital dark – highlighting the need to plan their Wi-Fi switch before they move. In addition, 73% of home movers now view Wi-Fi as a fundamental utility they expect to \u2018just work\u2019 (we assume they mean ‘broadband’) and this digital downtime prevents 30% from fully setting into their new homes.<\/p>\n

On top of that, the survey claims that 23% of respondents “mistakenly<\/em>” believe their internet connection will automatically transfer to their new address (this does in fact vary depending on network, location and ISP choice etc.), while 17% expect the setup to take only a few hours.<\/p>\n

Neil Smith, Chief Operating Officer at TalkTalk<\/a>, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cMoving home is one of the most stressful things we do. It should be about new beginnings, not digital disruption, especially as eight in ten people say Wi-Fi makes a house a home.<\/p>\n

We spotted an opportunity to go above and beyond for our customers by creating a HomeMove Squad who manage the process from start to finish, helping alleviate connectivity headaches during what we know is a stressful time.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re calling for people to prepare ahead of time and make sure they\u2019re thinking about their Wi-Fi when making plans to move home. That way, we can make sure everything is up and running as early as possible.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We’d generally agree with TalkTalk’s call for home movers to “pre-plan their Wi-Fi transfer ahead of time<\/em>” (even though they should be talking about ‘broadband’), but such things are often easier said than done. <\/p>\n

In reality, the rapid pace of property change can sometimes make it difficult to do time everything correctly and, strictly speaking, you shouldn’t be ordering a new broadband service until you’ve gained full legal control of the property. Likewise, there’s always the potential for a clash with an existing service that may not yet have been fully cancelled or ended, which is more likely to occur if the same underlying network is involved.<\/p>\n

Finally, it’s worth noting that most of us no longer live in areas where the absence of a live fixed broadband service means no access to the internet. For example, 4G<\/a>\/5G<\/a> based mobile broadband services and other solutions (e.g. Starlink<\/a>) often exist to act as an effective temporary remedy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Just to recap. In 2020 TalkTalk became the subject of a \u00a31.1bn takeover by Toscafund - controlled by hedge fund tycoon Martin Hughes (here), which including debt valued the broadband provider at around \u00a31.8bn. The deal took the ISP private and gave them more financial flexibility for their future plans. Since then, they've backed Freedom Fibre (here) and this week made the notable acquisition of Ethernet provider Virtual1 (here). According to the FT (paywall) and Sky News, TalkTalk is now said to have asked investment bank Lazard to review its options after allegedly being approach by several groups, including Vodafone and Sky (Sky Broadband). Lazard is a logical choice as they recently acted as Financial Advisor to TalkTalk on the Virtual1 transaction. Some industry analysts have reportedly suggested that TalkTalk itself could now be worth \\\"at least\\\" \u00a33bn. But this seems rather optimistic for an ISP that doesn't have any significant fixed line broadband infrastructure to call its own (excluding their old unbundled LLU network) and largely just piggybacks off Openreach (BT), CityFibre and Freedom Fibre. But TalkTalk do have a strong business and wholesale side. Funnily enough, Sky Broadband are in a similar position with their own fixed line base, while Vodafone also likes to piggyback off Openreach and CityFibre. At present, Vodafone has a fixed broadband base of 991,000 customers, while Sky Broadband is estimated to be home to around 6.7 million and TalkTalk has approximately 4.2 million. Suffice to say, anybody gobbling up TalkTalk would instantly become a much larger provider, giving them a greater say in how the UK broadband market develops and more opportunities for convergence (Vodafone with mobile, and Sky with mobile and TV). Crucially, TalkTalk's consumer base is mostly made up of those on older copper and hybrid fibre lines (i.e. ADSL and FTTC \\\/ VDSL2), which are ripe for a future migration to FTTP. At the time of writing, all of the aforementioned operators have decline to comment on the reports, and TalkTalk has yet to receive any serious formal offers. In other words, we strongly suspect that this is largely just an exercise in spin to help TalkTalk drum up some more productive interest in the idea. But at the same time, it's not unreasonable to suspect that they might succeed, as the interest seems genuine. On the other hand, we see reports like this every year or so and only a very few ever convert into a serious offer. Time will tell. Much may depend upon whether or not TalkTalk\u2019s new owners are more flexible and pragmatic about doing a deal than the previous lot. Just to recap. In 2020 TalkTalk became the subject of a \u00a31.1bn takeover by Toscafund - controlled by hedge fund tycoon Martin Hughes (here), which including debt valued the broadband provider at around \u00a31.8bn. The deal took the ISP private and gave them more financial flexibility for their future plans. Since then, they've backed Freedom Fibre (here) and this week made the notable acquisition of Ethernet provider Virtual1 (here). According to the FT (paywall) and Sky News, TalkTalk is now said to have asked investment bank Lazard to review its options after allegedly being approach by several groups, including Vodafone and Sky (Sky Broadband). Lazard is a logical choice as they recently acted as Financial Advisor to TalkTalk on the Virtual1 transaction. Some industry analysts have reportedly suggested that TalkTalk itself could now be worth \"at least\" \u00a33bn. But this seems rather optimistic for an ISP that doesn't have any significant fixed line broadband infrastructure to call its own (excluding their old unbundled LLU network) and largely just piggybacks off Openreach (BT), CityFibre and Freedom Fibre. But TalkTalk do have a strong business and wholesale side. Funnily enough, Sky Broadband are in a similar position with their own fixed line base, while Vodafone also likes to piggyback off Openreach and CityFibre. At present, Vodafone has a fixed broadband base of 991,000 customers, while Sky Broadband is estimated to be home to around 6.7 million and TalkTalk has approximately 4.2 million. Suffice to say, anybody gobbling up TalkTalk would instantly become a much larger provider, giving them a greater say in how the UK broadband market develops and more opportunities for convergence (Vodafone with mobile, and Sky with mobile and TV). Crucially, TalkTalk's consumer base is mostly made up of those on older copper and hybrid fibre lines (i.e. ADSL and FTTC \/ VDSL2), which are ripe for a future migration to FTTP. At the time of writing, all of the aforementioned operators have decline to comment on the reports, and TalkTalk has yet to receive any serious formal offers. In other words, we strongly suspect that this is largely just an exercise in spin to help TalkTalk drum up some more productive interest in the idea. But at the same time, it's not unreasonable to suspect that they might succeed, as the interest seems genuine. On the other hand, we see reports like this every year or so and only a very few ever convert into a serious offer. Time will tell. Much may depend upon whether or not TalkTalk\u2019s new owners are more flexible and pragmatic about doing a deal than the previous lot.
