{"id":43616,"date":"2025-10-24T10:05:28","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T09:05:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=43616"},"modified":"2025-10-24T10:05:28","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T09:05:28","slug":"ofcom-publish-final-results-of-uk-5g-mobile-auction-for-26ghz-and-40ghz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/10\/ofcom-publish-final-results-of-uk-5g-mobile-auction-for-26ghz-and-40ghz.html","title":{"rendered":"Ofcom Publish Final Results of UK 5G Mobile Auction for 26GHz and 40GHz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK telecoms regulator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>, has this morning revealed the final (assignment stage) results of last week&#8217;s auction of the 26GHz and 40GHz millimetre wave (mmW) spectrum bands for use by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> mobile broadband operators, which sets out precisely which frequencies within each band will be allocated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> and VodafoneThree (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a>).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Just to recap. The three mobile operators won a combined 800MHz of spectrum frequency in the <strong>26GHz<\/strong> band and 1GHz of spectrum frequency in the <strong>40GHz<\/strong> band \u2013 each paying \u00a313m for this spectrum. The total revenue raised from the Principal stage were \u00a339m, which has gone to HM Treasury. But a final assignment stage was needed in order to decide precisely which parts of each band would go to whom.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> The regulator was aiming to make 5.4GHz of spectrum frequency available across both the 26GHz and 40GHz bands.<\/div>\n<p>Following completion of the assignment stage, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> has now granted licences to the three bidders for the following frequencies across the two bands. This means the auction is now fully complete, and the winners are free to deploy the spectrum in accordance with the conditions of their licences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> \u2013 26.7-27.5 GHz and 41.5-42.5 GHz<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> \u2013 25.1-25.9 GHz and 40.5-41.5 GHz<\/li>\n<li>VodafoneThree \u2013 25.9-26.7 GHz and 42.5-43.5 GHz<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At present, most mobile operators already have access to several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> capable bands between <strong>700MHz<\/strong> and<strong> 3.8GHz<\/strong>. Such frequencies reflect the same sort of low and mid-band radio spectrum that the mobile operators have been using since the advent of the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> data networks. But <strong>26GHz<\/strong> (25.1-27.5GHz) and<strong> 40GHz<\/strong> (40.5-43.5GHz) are intended to complement that by providing lots of additional spectrum, which means more data capacity for extremely fast speeds (e.g. multi-Gigabit).<\/p>\n<p>However, such high frequency mobile signals tend to be very weak and can\u2019t cover a wider area without a much denser and thus more expensive network, which in practice means they\u2019ll primarily be used for serving busy urban areas (shopping malls, airports etc. \u2013 \u201c<em>High Density Areas<\/em>\u201c) and fixed wireless broadband (FWA) links. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> has thus made the spectrum available with 15-year licences across 68 \u201c<em>high-density<\/em>\u201d areas (i.e. cities and select transport hubs).<\/p>\n<p>The catch is that it will take time for the network operators to fully harness the new bands, not least because many modern devices (Smartphones, routers etc.) and radio kit don\u2019t yet fully support them.
