{"id":43827,"date":"2025-11-11T17:01:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T17:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=43827"},"modified":"2025-11-11T17:02:21","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T17:02:21","slug":"openreach-temporarily-withdraw-multiport-ont-on-uk-fttp-broadband-lines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/11\/openreach-temporarily-withdraw-multiport-ont-on-uk-fttp-broadband-lines.html","title":{"rendered":"Openreach Temporarily Withdraw Multiport ONT on UK FTTP Broadband Lines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Network access provider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>) has informed UK broadband ISPs that they will be &#8220;<em>temporarily withdrawing<\/em>&#8221; the provision of their Multiport Optical Network Terminal (ONT) device and the related Box Swap service (i.e. replacing an existing \/ older ONT with a new Multiport ONT). The move is due to some &#8220;<em>technical issues experienced<\/em>&#8221; by providers.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Just for some context. The ONT or optical modem device is usually installed inside your home or office, near to where the fibre optic cable physically enters your property, and its primary job is simply to take the optical signal and convert it into an electrical one that can be connected to your broadband router via a Local Area Network (Ethernet) port. The standard ONT is usually a very small single port device.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a>\u2019s full fibre network currently covers c.21 million premises and is expected to reach 25 million by December 2026 (80%+ of the UK) \u2013 at a cost of up to \u00a315bn. After that, there\u2019s also an aspiration to reach up to 30 million by 2030.<\/div>\n<p>Back in May 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> moved to introduce a new <strong>Nokia<\/strong> based multiport ONT service on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> lines for those who need it (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/03\/openreach-offer-new-multiport-ont-with-uk-fttp-broadband.html\">here<\/a>), which was useful for education sites, libraries, post offices, petrol stations, hotels and more. But this appeared to create some technical issues for broadband ISPs using services on multiport ONTs installed on both Nokia and <strong>Huawei<\/strong> based head end exchanges.<\/p>\n<p>The network operator is currently working on a fix for these issues with the vendors and has decided to temporarily withdraw provision of the service, which will run for 6 months from 13th December 2025 to 13th June 2026. Any multiport orders which receive KCI2 prior to 13th December 2025 will still go ahead and replacements of already deployed multiport ONTs will also continue, but those are the main exceptions.<\/p>\n<p>Openreach has also been conducting trials with a new <strong>Adtran<\/strong> based multiport ONT in Northern Ireland and Ipswich, which will continue through this pause.
