{"id":4397,"date":"2013-10-28T01:02:02","date_gmt":"2013-10-28T00:02:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=4397"},"modified":"2013-10-28T15:12:36","modified_gmt":"2013-10-28T14:12:36","slug":"uk-ftth-fibre-optic-broadband-connections-pass-186500-premises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/10\/uk-ftth-fibre-optic-broadband-connections-pass-186500-premises.html","title":{"rendered":"UK FTTH Fibre Optic Broadband ISP Connections Pass 186500 Premises"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest information on coverage of true fibre optic broadband (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a>\/P\/B) connections in the United Kingdom suggests that the market hasn&#8217;t moved much since the end of 2012.\u00a0The latest count for June 2013\u00a0records a total of 186,500 premises have now been passed by the ultrafast (100Mbps+) connection method.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting to note that this figure, which was kindly supplied to us by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/pointtopic\" target=\"_blank\">Point Topic<\/a>, is somewhat lower than the <strong>199,000<\/strong> reported by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ftthcouncil.eu\" target=\"_blank\">FTTC Council Europe<\/a> for the end of December 2012 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/01\/ultrafast-ftth-fibre-optic-broadband-connections-pass-199000-uk-homes.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). This appears to be due to a collection of small differences between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/pointtopic\" target=\"_blank\">Point Topic<\/a> and the Council figures (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/cityfibre\" target=\"_blank\">CityFibre<\/a>\u00a0previously quoted nearly 24,000 passed but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/pointtopic\" target=\"_blank\">Point Topic<\/a> use a figure of 21,000 after the\u00a0fibre provider\u00a0revised their figure downwards).<\/p>\n<p>Similarly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/hyperopticfibre\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Hyperoptic<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/b4rn\" target=\"_blank\">B4RN<\/a> and KC tend to issue much more sporadic coverage updates and so their figures are most likely higher than what is currently reported but probably not by much. One big reason for the slow progress is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s decision to abandon their target to cover <strong>2.5 million premises<\/strong> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/04\/bt-abandons-native-uk-fttp-broadband-rollout-for-fttpod-and-fttc.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>), which formed part of the original \u00a32.5bn commercial roll-out to 66% of the UK. At the end of last year it was estimated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> had passed 100,000 premises with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> and so far that figure hasn&#8217;t changed, at least not significantly.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been well documented that BTOpenreach often struggled with the time and complexity required to wire up individuals homes and instead has put more focus on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> roll-out and expensive <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>-on-Demand<\/strong> (FoD \/ FTTPoD) solution,\u00a0the latter of which\u00a0isn&#8217;t likely to become a viable mass market solution anytime soon\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/09\/bt-openreach-reveal-latest-uk-roll-plan-330mb-fttp-demand.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). The separate deployment of native FTTP under the government&#8217;s \u00a31.2bn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bduk\" target=\"_blank\">Broadband Delivery UK<\/a> (BDUK) scheme doesn&#8217;t look as if it will be adding much to the total either but only time will tell.<\/p>\n<p>Instead it looks as if smaller ISPs (<strong>mostly altnets<\/strong>) will be left to pick up the slack and some of them certainly have bold plans. For example, KC in Hull\u00a0has so far pushed their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a> network out to pass 20,300 premises but this should reach 30,000 by the end of the year and 45,000 come March 2015 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/10\/hull-uk-isp-kc-aiming-achieve-eu-target-universal-30mbps-2020.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). Similarly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/hyperopticfibre\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Hyperoptic<\/a>&#8217;s service currently covers 23,000 premises in London but their goal is 500,000 within the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>Lest we not forget the contributions of operators like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ask4\" target=\"_blank\">Ask4<\/a> (10,000 passed with FTTB in Leeds), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/b4rn\" target=\"_blank\">B4RN<\/a> (1,500), IFNL (6,000) and various others. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> might not be looking towards a pure fibre optic network approach, preferring instead to focus on the cheaper but also slower <strong>hybrid fibre<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>\/N\/Cable) methods, but many others clearly are.
