The move forms&nbsp;part of their UK-wide rollout, which is now live in a total of more than 500 locations (70% of the UK\u2019s population or c.49 million people).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Just to recap. 5GSA networks are pure end-to-end <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> that can deliver ultra-low latency times, greater energy efficiency, better speeds (particularly uploads), network slicing, improved support for IoT devices, increased reliability and security etc. Existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> networks often use a Non-Standalone (NSA) approach, which is hobbled by being partly reliant upon older and slower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> infrastructure.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> The upgrades are part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a>\u2019s wider \u00a3700 million Mobile Transformation Plan.<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a>\u2019s 5GSA rollout first began in February 2024 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/02\/o2-launch-5g-standalone-uk-mobile-network-in-14-uk-cities.html\">here<\/a>) and typically aims to reach \u201c<em>at least 90% outdoor coverage<\/em>\u201d in every location they target. The same should hold true for Sheffield, where roughly 580,000 residents across the city and in surrounding areas will be able to benefit from the new 5GSA network.<\/p>\n<p>The surrounding areas mentioned above are said to include Chapeltown, Mexborough, Wombwell, Swinton, Conisbrough, Dinnington, Wickersley, Rossington, Bessacarr, Armthorpe, Bentley, Maltby, Hoyland and Thurnscoe.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Dr Robert Joyce, O2&#8217;s Director of Mobile Access Engineering, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur new 5G Standalone network is now live in Sheffield, providing an impressive upgrade for local people and businesses and creating new opportunities in and around the city.
