The Starlink<\/a> service from SpaceX, which operates a mega constellation using thousands of ultrafast broadband internet satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) for the UK and globally, has revealed that they’re about to start making data from their\u202fSpace Situational Awareness (SSA) system,\u202fcalled Stargaze, available for free to other satellite<\/a> operators.<\/p>\n

Starlink<\/a> currently has around 9,600 satellites<\/strong><\/a> in Low Earth Orbit (c.6,150 are v2 \/ GEN2 variants) \u2013 mostly at altitudes of between c.340-525km. Residential customers in the UK usually pay from \u00a335 a month for the \u2018Residential 100Mbps<\/em>\u2019 unlimited data plan (kit price may vary due to different offers), which also promises uploads of c.15-35Mbps and low latency connectivity. Faster packages exist at greater cost, while more restrictive (data capped) options also exist for roaming users (e.g. \u00a350 per month for 100 GigaBytes of data).<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> By the end of 2025 Starlink<\/a>\u2019s global network had 9 million customers (up from 6m in July 2025). The service had 110,000 customers in the UK as of July 2025 (up from 87,000 in 2024) \u2013 mostly in rural areas.<\/div>\n

However, one of the growing concerns with such large constellations is that they may increase the risk of a Kessler Syndrome<\/strong> style event, which is a theoretical situation in which a runaway chain reaction of collisions in low Earth orbit (LEO) creates a cloud of space debris density. This then damages many other satellites and potentially renders Earth’s orbit unusable for satellites and future space missions \/ rockets.<\/p>\n

SpaceX thus operates a novel Space Situational Awareness (SSA) system,\u202fcalled Stargaze<\/strong>, which they say enhances the safety and sustainability of satellite<\/a> operations in LEO. The system uses data collected from nearly\u202f30,000 star trackers, each\u202fof which makes\u202fcontinuous observations of nearby objects, resulting in\u202fapproximately 30 million transits detected daily\u202facross the fleet.<\/p>\n

The system autonomously detects observations of orbiting objects and are then aggregated to generate\u202faccurate\u202forbit estimates and\u202fpredictions\u202fof position and velocity\u202ffor all detected objects\u202fin near real-time. These predictions integrate into a\u202fspace-traffic\u202fmanagement\u202fplatform\u202fthat\u202fidentifies\u202fpotential close approaches\u202fbetween\u202fobjects\u202fin\u202fspace and\u202fgenerates Conjunction Data Messages (CDMs).\u202fThe system can provide conjunction screening\u202fresults within minutes, compared to the current industry standard of several hours.<\/p>\n

Such systems are necessary because there are all sorts of hazards for Earth’s increasingly crowded satellite<\/a> space to consider. Practices \u2014 such as leaving rocket bodies in LEO, operators manoeuvring\u202ftheir satellites\u202fwithout sharing trajectory predictions or coordinating with other active satellites, and\u202fcountries\u202fconducting anti-satellite tests \u2014 have all heightened the risk of collision,\u202fnecessitating improvements in\u202fspace-traffic coordination.<\/p>\n

The problem is that conventional methods typically\u202fobserve\u202fobjects only a limited number of times per day, causing large\u202funcertainties in orbital predictions, further compounded by volatile space weather. So in order to address this, Starlink has gone a step further by announcing that its screening data\u202fwill be made\u202favailable\u202fto the broader satellite operator community “free of charge in the coming weeks.<\/em>”<\/p>\n

Starlink Statement<\/strong><\/p>\n

To maximize safety for all satellites in space, SpaceX\u202fwill be\u202fmaking Stargaze conjunction data available to all operators, free of charge, via\u202fits\u202fspace-traffic management\u202fplatform.\u202fThis platform has been in a \u201cclosed beta<\/em>\u201d\u202fwith\u202fover a dozen\u202fparticipating\u202fsatellite operators, allowing\u202flow-latency ephemeris sharing and conjunction\u202fscreening.<\/p>\n

Starting\u202fthis spring,\u202foperators that\u202fsubmit\u202fephemeris (trajectory predictions) to the platform\u202fwill\u202falso\u202freceive\u202fCDMs against Stargaze data,\u202fin addition to\u202fephemeris from other participating operators.\u202fThis ensures that operators have low-latency\u202faccess to the best\u202favailable\u202fdata for conjunction assessment.<\/p>\n

Stargaze already has a proven\u202ftrack record\u202fin its utility for space safety.\u202fIn late 2025, a Starlink satellite\u202fencountered\u202fa conjunction with a\u202fthird-party\u202fsatellite that was performing maneuvers, but whose operator was not sharing ephemeris.\u202fUntil five hours before\u202fthe conjunction,\u202fthe close\u202fapproach\u202fwas\u202fanticipated\u202fto be\u202f~9,000 meters\u2014considered a safe miss-distance with zero probability of collision.<\/p>\n

With just five hours to go, the\u202fthird-party satellite performed a\u202fmanoeuvre\u202fwhich\u202fchanged its trajectory and collapsed the\u202fanticipated\u202fmiss distance to just\u202f~60 meters.\u202fStargaze quickly detected this manoeuvre and published an updated trajectory to the screening platform, generating new\u202fCDMs\u202fwhich were\u202fimmediately\u202fdistributed to relevant satellites.\u202fUltimately, the\u202fStarlink\u202fsatellite was able to react within an hour of the manoeuvre being detected, planning an avoidance\u202fmaneuver\u202fto\u202freduce\u202fcollision risk back down to zero.<\/p>\n

With so little time to react, this would not have been possible by relying on legacy\u202fradar systems or\u202fhigh-latency\u202fconjunction screening processes. If observations of the\u202fthird-party satellite were less frequent, conjunction screening took longer, or the reaction\u202frequired\u202fhuman approval,\u202fsuch an event might not have been successfully mitigated.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Despite the development and improvements of their system, SpaceX have recently become keen to encourage other satellite operators to start sharing their data on satellite trajectories and now appear to be trying to lead by example (partly because their huge network also makes them among the most vulnerable to such dangerous events).<\/p>\n

“Starlink ephemeris is updated and shared\u202fpublicly every hour, and all other operators\u202fshould\u202fdo\u202fthe same<\/em>,” said the company. “By providing this ephemeris sharing and conjunction screening service free of charge,\u202fwe hope to\u202fmotivate\u202foperators to take similar steps towards ephemeris sharing and safe flight<\/em>.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
