{"id":44866,"date":"2026-02-25T08:04:50","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T08:04:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=44866"},"modified":"2026-02-25T08:12:27","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T08:12:27","slug":"cellular-starlink-service-targets-peak-mobile-broadband-speeds-of-150mbps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/02\/cellular-starlink-service-targets-peak-mobile-broadband-speeds-of-150mbps.html","title":{"rendered":"Cellular Starlink Service Targets Peak Mobile Broadband Speeds of 150Mbps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SpaceX has revealed that its \u201c<em>greatly enhanced<\/em>\u201d second generation (GEN2) of <a href=\"https:\/\/starlink.com\/business\/direct-to-cell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Direct to Cell<\/strong><\/a> (DtC) capable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/starlink\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a> broadband satellites, which are due to launch in 2027, will aim to support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> connectivity and deliver peak data speeds of 150Mbps (Megabits per second) per user.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/starlink\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a> currently has around <a href=\"https:\/\/planet4589.org\/space\/con\/star\/stats.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>9,800 satellites<\/strong><\/a> in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) \u2013 mostly at altitudes of between c.340-525km. Residential customers in the UK usually pay from \u00a335 a month for the \u2018<em>Residential 100Mbps<\/em>\u2019 unlimited data plan (kit price may vary due to different offers), which also promises uploads of c.15-35Mbps and low latency connectivity. Faster packages exist at greater cost, while more restrictive (data capped) options also exist for roaming users (e.g. \u00a350 per month for 100 GigaBytes of data).<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> By the end of 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/starlink\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a>\u2019s global network had 9 million customers (up from 6m in July 2025). The service had 110,000 customers in the UK as of July 2025 (up from 87,000 in 2024) \u2013 mostly in rural areas.<\/div>\n<p>Some 650 of those satellites also support their first generation (GEN1) DtC (aka &#8211; <strong>Direct to Device<\/strong>) service, which delivers a basic (limited data and messaging etc.) global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> mobile roaming service to unmodified Smartphones on the ground, typically alongside supporting mobile operators (e.g. <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-256\" title=\"O2 Satellite\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2satellite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>O2 Satellite<\/strong><\/a> in the UK). The goal with this is to keep mobile users connected even in remote areas, where terrestrial mobile signals may struggle to reach.<\/p>\n<p>However, SpaceX&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">satellite<\/a> policy lead Udrivolf Pica, as part of a video speech at the International Telecommunication Union&#8217;s (ITU) Space Connect conference, yesterday revealed how their GEN2 DtC service would look to harness more radio spectrum (e.g. 2GHz MSS Band &#8211; 1980-2010MHz \/ 2170-2200MHz, acquired from EchoStar) and deploy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> capable satellites that are &#8220;<em>aiming at peak speeds of 150Mbps per user<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" style=\"padding: 0px; width: 100%; border-radius: 6px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2026-article-illustrations\/SpaceX-ITU-Slide-DtC-GEN2-Targets.webp\" alt=\"SpaceX-ITU-Slide-DtC-GEN2-Targets\"><\/p>\n<p>On the one hand 150Mbps is slower than what a lot of modern terrestrial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> networks can currently achieve. But when coming from satellites, all sitting hundreds of kilometres up in space, it&#8217;s much more of a technical marvel to be able to deliver that sort of performance to individual users. In fact many UK users in rural areas often struggle to get even close to such speeds, even when they have good coverage. In addition, AST Space Mobile, which is being adopted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> in the UK to rival Starlink, also gives a presentation at the 15:28 minute mark.
