{"id":45500,"date":"2026-04-16T16:40:05","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T15:40:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=45500"},"modified":"2026-04-16T16:41:05","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T15:41:05","slug":"snp-2026-manifesto-dangles-possible-subsea-fibre-cable-to-shetland-islands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/snp-2026-manifesto-dangles-possible-subsea-fibre-cable-to-shetland-islands.html","title":{"rendered":"SNP 2026 Manifesto Dangles Possible Subsea Fibre Cable to Shetland Islands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scottish National Party<\/a> (P\u00e0rtaidh N\u00e0iseanta na h-Alba) has today published details of their 2026 Manifesto for the 7th May election, which among other things calls on the UK Government to &#8220;<em>introduce affordable broadband social tariffs<\/em>&#8221; and pledges to commission a feasibility study on the idea of running another subsea fibre link to the Shetland Islands.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Shetland &#8211; a remote subarctic archipelago that resides some way north of Scotland &#8211; is currently already connected by two major subsea fibre cables, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shefa.fo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SHEFA-2<\/a> (Faroese Telecom) submarine (subsea) and the <strong>R100 North<\/strong> cable that was recently built by broadband giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> as part of the <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-142\" title=\"Scottish Government\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/scotgov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scottish Government<\/a>\u2019s \u00a3600m Reaching 100% (<strong>R100<\/strong>) project (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/05\/openreach-to-start-r100-subsea-fibre-broadband-build-in-scotland.html\">here<\/a>). The R100 project also deployed a number of smaller subsea fibre links between mainland Shetland and its smaller islands.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this Shetland has suffered from a number of recent subsea cable breaks, which caused plenty of disruption to parts of the island&#8217;s broadband and mobile services. The SNP doesn&#8217;t mention those problems in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snp.org\/manifesto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2026 manifesto<\/a> or make a solid commitment to actually build the new cable, but we presume their ambition is to improve redundancy to the island communities.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>2026 SNP Manifesto Extract<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Digital Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will accelerate the rollout of full fibre broadband in Scotland by supporting providers to reach more rural\/remote areas. We will establish a digital skills development initiative, to empower digitally excluded people to gain the skills necessary to access digital services and employment opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>We will also commission a feasibility study to explore potential options for a subsea cable between Shetland and mainland Scotland which would provide high-speed internet and telecommunications for businesses and communities across the island.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We should point out that VodafoneThree UK are already conducting a \u201c<em>feasibility study<\/em>\u201d to explore the possibility and cost of deploying a new subsea fibre optic cable system to help transform broadband and mobile connectivity in the Shetland Islands (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/06\/new-subsea-cable-link-being-explored-for-the-shetland-islands.html\">here<\/a>), although it remains unclear whether that will amount to anything.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the manifesto pledged to &#8220;<em>deliver a Digital inclusion Action Plan and call on the UK Government to introduce affordable broadband social tariffs<\/em>,&#8221; although a large number of broadband and mobile providers have already introduced some very affordable Social Tariffs.
