Network operator nexfibre<\/a>, which shares some of its parentage with Virgin Media<\/a> (harnessing the same build engine), has today announced a \u00a32.9 million investment in the large County Durham (England) town of Darlington to help upgrade 18,000 homes to full fibre (FTTP<\/a>) broadband. The work is linked to the planned acquisition of altnet Netomnia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Just to recap. Telef\u00f3nica, Liberty Global and InfraVia recently reached a \u00a32bn deal to acquire Netomnia<\/a> (here<\/a>) and, as part of that, nexfibre<\/a> announced a plan to finance the FTTP<\/a> upgrade of 2.1 million homes covered by Virgin Media<\/a>\u2019s old Hybrid Fibre Coax<\/strong> (HFC) network (i.e. those that are \u201cadjacent<\/em>\u201d to the Netomnia<\/a> footprint), with VMO2 paying wholesale fibre access fees on its customers in those homes as the fibre becomes available (with the \u201cmajority expected to be ready by the end of 2027<\/em>\u201c).<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> Virgin Media<\/a> and giffgaff<\/a> are currently the only retail players on nexfibre<\/a>\u2019s wholesale accessible XGS-PON FTTP<\/a> network.<\/div>\n

Since then, we\u2019ve seen nexfibre announce a growing number of related HFC to FTTP upgrades (here<\/a>, here<\/a> and here<\/a>) and today\u2019s one for Darlington<\/strong> is the latest (Northern Echo<\/a>). Openreach<\/a>, Virgin Media (inc. nexfibre) and Netomnia<\/a> already have significant coverage of gigabit-capable broadband in the town, although most of Virgin’s network there is still HFC.<\/p>\n

The combined nexfibre and Netomnia full-fibre network footprint is expected to reach around 8 million premises by the end of 2027 (nexfibre alone currently covers 2.6m premises). The goal of nexfibre is to make this network \u201cavailable to all internet service providers<\/em>\u201c, which will hopefully result in them enticing non-group ISPs to join their platform at wholesale too (progress on this front has been rather glacial).<\/p>\n

In an ideal world nexfibre will perhaps be hoping to sign large ISPs like Vodafone<\/a>, Sky Broadband<\/a> and Zen Internet<\/a> to sell packages over their network.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
