Network operator nexfibre<\/a>, which shares some of its parentage with UK ISP Virgin Media<\/a> (they harness the same build teams), has today confirmed another batch of four locations across the United Kingdom that will benefit from an upgrade to their latest full fibre (FTTP<\/a>, XGS-PON) broadband technology.<\/p>\n

Just to recap. Telef\u00f3nica, Liberty Global and InfraVia recently reached a deal to acquire rival Netomnia<\/a> (here<\/a>). As part of that nexfibre<\/a> also announced a plan to finance the FTTP<\/a> upgrade of 2.1 million homes covered by Virgin Media<\/a>\u2019s old Hybrid Fibre Coax<\/strong> (HFC) network (i.e. those that are \u201cadjacent<\/em>\u201d to the Netomnia<\/a> footprint), with VMO2 paying wholesale fibre access fees on its customers in those homes as the fibre becomes available.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> Netomnia<\/a>\u2019s full fibre network currently covers over 3m UK premises (rising to 3.4m by deal completion), while nexfibre<\/a> reaches 2.6m (Virgin Media<\/a> and giffgaff<\/a> are currently the only retail players on nexfibre\u2019s wholesale accessible FTTP<\/a> network). The combined network\u2019s full-fibre footprint is expected to reach around 8m premises by the \u201cend of 2027<\/em>\u201c.<\/div>\n

Since then nexfibre has been busy announcing a growing number of related HFC to FTTP upgrade areas under the aforementioned 2.1m homes commitment (here<\/a>, here<\/a>, here<\/a>, here<\/a> and here<\/a>) and today\u2019s update adds another 4 locations to the ones we\u2019ve already covered.<\/p>\n

Once again, these are places that can often already access gigabit-capable broadband via Virgin Media\u2019s old HFC network, but which will now also be getting access to FTTP via the more open wholesale platform established under nexfibre. All of this will help to connect up their coverage to Netomnia\u2019s nearby areas.<\/p>\n
