{"id":45606,"date":"2026-04-28T10:23:41","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T09:23:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=45606"},"modified":"2026-04-28T10:23:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T09:23:41","slug":"npl-and-vodafone-uk-trial-terrestrial-fibre-based-alternative-to-gps-timing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/npl-and-vodafone-uk-trial-terrestrial-fibre-based-alternative-to-gps-timing.html","title":{"rendered":"NPL and Vodafone UK Trial Terrestrial Fibre-based Alternative to GPS Timing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Broadband and mobile operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> has joined with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) to successfully complete a set of trials using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npl.co.uk\/products-services\/time-frequency\/npltime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPLTime\u00ae<\/a> service, which is a new terrestrial, fibre optic-based alternative to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">satellite<\/a>-based GPS timing signals to help keep the UK&#8217;s critical digital and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> \/ 6G mobile network infrastructure resilient and secure.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At present <strong>GPS<\/strong> and <strong>Global Navigation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">Satellite<\/a> Systems<\/strong> (GNSS) remain the default for the telecoms industry, although there have long been concerns about the growing threats to satellites in orbit, such as from unfriendly countries and extreme solar storms. In response a number of projects have been developing terrestrial solutions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> The move supports VodafoneThree\u2019s post-merger plan to invest <strong>\u00a311bn<\/strong> into upgrading the UK\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> mobile infrastructure and coverage over the next decade (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/06\/vodafonethree-outline-future-uk-network-plans-and-4g-to-5g-speed-boosts.html\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/06\/vodafone-clarifies-plans-for-joint-network-roaming-with-three-uk.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/08\/vodafone-and-three-uk-update-on-progress-of-joint-network-sharing.html\">here<\/a>). The combined business aspires to reach more than 99% of the UK population with their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> Standalone (5GSA) network by 2030, then 99.96% by 2034.<\/div>\n<p>As part of this, the government has also invested \u00a3155m to develop alternative ways of delivering accurate <strong>Positioning, Navigation, and Timing<\/strong> (PNT) solutions to complement GPS (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/11\/gov-invest-155m-to-improve-uk-wireless-and-satellite-navigation-signals.html\">here<\/a>) \u2013 supporting everything from mobile (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a>\/<a class=\"shortlink shortlink-166 shortlink-chref\" title=\"5G Mobile Technology\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_mobile.php\">5G<\/a>) signals to in-car Sat Nav \u2013 and have put \u00a36.9m toward better <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">satellite<\/a> optical links and 5G NTN solutions (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/11\/government-invests-6-9m-in-next-gen-uk-satellite-optical-links-and-5g-ntn.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The new partnership being announced today feeds into this by adapting <strong>NPLTime<\/strong>, an end-to-end fibre-based timing service originally used by the finance sector (this has been live for 8 years), into a telecom-grade solution that is said to maintain accuracy within 40ns (nanoseconds), reducing reliance on GNSS (GPS) for time synchronisation.<\/p>\n<p>The telecom version of the NPLTime service will need to meet stringent ITU standards for signal accuracy, stability, resilience and traceability. The new service will also aim to deliver a terrestrial reference signal that is traceable to UTC (NPL). VodafoneThree is now the first UK Mobile Network Operator (MNO) to test a terrestrial NMI-provided time source within its network.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Andrea Don\u00e0, Chief Network Officer at VodafoneThree, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our work with the National Physical Laboratory marks a significant step in reducing over reliance on GPS-based timing and strengthening the foundations of our future-ready 5G Standalone network. By testing a terrestrial timing solution we\u2019re helping to ensure that our \u00a311\u202fbillion investment delivers a network that is not only faster and more reliable, but also more secure and resilient for our customers.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Dr Peter Thompson CBE, NPL\u2019s CEO, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccurate and resilient timing is fundamental to the UK\u2019s digital infrastructure. This partnership with Vodafone showcases how UK innovation can deliver secure and resilient timing solutions.
