{"id":46761,"date":"2026-06-03T16:03:52","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T15:03:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=46761"},"modified":"2026-06-03T16:03:52","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T15:03:52","slug":"openreachs-fttp-broadband-take-up-in-wales-nears-50-percent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/06\/openreachs-fttp-broadband-take-up-in-wales-nears-50-percent.html","title":{"rendered":"Openreach&#8217;s FTTP Broadband Take-up in Wales Nears 50 Percent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Network access provider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>) has today revealed that their Fibre-to-the-Premises (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) broadband ISP network has now passed an important milestone by covering 1.25 million premises (81%+) across Wales (up from 1m at the end of 2024), with take-up already said to be &#8220;<em>approaching<\/em>&#8221; the impressive 50% mark (across the UK it&#8217;s 38.27%).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>All of this work supports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a>&#8217;s wider investment of up to \u00a315bn in deploying full fibre technology to cover 25 million UK premises by the end of December 2026 (currently on 23m). After that, there\u2019s a further ambition to reach up to 30 million premises by 2030, but the build plan for the 2027-2030 period and final coverage target has yet to be confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Take note that the figure of 1.25m (81%+) above only reflects the coverage delivered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a>&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> network, while the overall reach of full fibre in Wales is around 86%, which includes work by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> (inc. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/nexfibre\" target=\"_blank\">nexfibre<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/spectruminternet\" target=\"_blank\">Ogi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/netomnia\" target=\"_blank\">Netomnia<\/a> etc.<\/p>\n<p>Openreach\u2019s service, once live, can be ordered via various ISPs, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> and many more (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/comparing-isp-prices-for-1gbps-broadband-on-openreachs-uk-network-2026-vs-2024.html\"><strong>Openreach FTTP ISP Choices<\/strong><\/a>) \u2013 it is not currently an automatic upgrade, although some ISPs are doing free automatic upgrades as older copper-based services and lines a withdrawn.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Martin Williams, Openreach\u2019s Partnership Director for Wales, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an important moment for Wales and a clear sign of the progress being made to improve digital connectivity across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Across the UK we\u2019re seeing more people choose Full Fibre as it becomes available, and it\u2019s encouraging to see that momentum reflected in Wales too, with more households starting to experience the everyday benefits &#8211; whether that\u2019s working from home, studying, running a business or staying connected.<\/p>\n<p>But these upgrades don\u2019t happen automatically. Many homes and businesses could already benefit from better broadband today, and I\u2019d encourage people to check what\u2019s available where they live and speak to their broadband provider about upgrading.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Separately to this, the Pembrokeshire County Council (PCC) has today celebrated reaching a major digital milestone with 75% of the county now able to access gigabit-capable broadband, which is up from just over 5% coverage in 2019. The announcement notes that 43.7% of gigabit coverage in Pembrokeshire is being delivered by alternative network suppliers, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/spectruminternet\" target=\"_blank\">Ogi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/voneus\" target=\"_blank\">Voneus<\/a> and local provider Dragon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a>, albeit with Openreach still playing the biggest role.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Cllr Paul Miller, Deputy Leader of PCC, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cReaching over 75% gigabit capable coverage is a major milestone for Pembrokeshire and demonstrates what can be achieved through partnership working. In 2019, large parts of the county were being overlooked for investment and just 5% could get gigabit speeds.
