{"id":46949,"date":"2026-06-19T12:34:46","date_gmt":"2026-06-19T11:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=46949"},"modified":"2026-06-19T12:34:46","modified_gmt":"2026-06-19T11:34:46","slug":"broadband-isp-olilo-sign-uk-government-charter-to-stop-unexpected-bill-hikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/06\/broadband-isp-olilo-sign-uk-government-charter-to-stop-unexpected-bill-hikes.html","title":{"rendered":"Broadband ISP Olilo Sign UK Government Charter to Stop Unexpected Bill Hikes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The relatively new broadband provider <a href=\"https:\/\/olilo.co.uk\/l2tp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olilo<\/a> has today become the latest retail ISP to sign up to the Government\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/02\/major-uk-broadband-isps-sign-gov-charter-to-stop-unexpected-bill-increases.html\">Telecoms Consumer Charter<\/a><\/strong> (TCC), which was first introduced in February 2026 and follows the addition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/hyperopticfibre\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Hyperoptic<\/a> at the start of this week.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Government has so far succeeded, via the TCC, in getting all the major and a few smaller UK broadband and phone providers to make a commitment to \u201c<em>stop unexpected bill increases<\/em>\u201c, make social tariffs easier to access and provide clear contract \/ package information etc. \u2013 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/plusnetuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Plusnet<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a>, VodafoneThree (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/kcom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">KCOM<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/communityfibre\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">CommunityFibre<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wightfibre\">WightFibre<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/hyperopticfibre\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Hyperoptic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> The new charter is also supported by the Internet Service Providers Association (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ispa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ISPA<\/a>) and the Independent Networks Cooperative Association (INCA).<\/div>\n<p>The good news is that Olilo has now signed up to the charter too, although we can&#8217;t yet see a social tariff on their website. But it should be said that the TCC doesn\u2019t have any real teeth, won&#8217;t do anything to stop mid-contract price hikes themselves and nor does it address the unfairness of how such price hikes are currently being applied (e.g. applying the same flat c.\u00a32-\u00a34 monthly increase to those who pay just c.\u00a320 a month and those who pay c.\u00a3100 \u2013 disproportionately targeting those least able to afford it).<\/p>\n<p>The TCC was instead a late reaction to last year\u2019s controversial decision by mobile operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/10\/o2-uk-increases-mid-contract-price-hikes-for-mobile-customers.html\">here<\/a>), which suddenly increased the cost of their existing mid-contract price hikes policy and applied that to their existing customers too (i.e. those who had signed-up via the previous policy were forced to accept the new one and its higher prices).
