Reports are coming in that a number of major and minor broadband providers, such as Sky Broadband<\/a>, BT<\/a>, Virgin Media<\/a>, Vodafone<\/a> and many others, are currently suffering some disruption to their online availability checkers and ordering systems that is preventing new customers from signing up. A few providers have linked this to a problem with Openreach<\/a> (BT<\/a> Group).<\/p>\n

The experiences being reported seem to vary between providers, which is something we’ve confirmed with our own testing. For example, customers trying to place a broadband order via Vodafone<\/a> can do so in CityFibre<\/a> areas, but not in Openreach<\/a> ones, which instead return a “Sorry, we can\u2019t get broadband to your address<\/em>” message (on previously available locations).<\/p>\n

By comparison, Sky Broadband<\/a> seems to be rejecting all postcode checks with a generic message to say: “We’re having some technical issues. We’re working to this fixed as soon as possible<\/em>.” The issue is cropping up at various other providers too, albeit with some variation between how platforms are handling it.<\/p>\n

Sources within Sky have pointed the finger at Openreach<\/a>’s platform (API), which has also been echoed by a service status update from ICUK; this is also be touching the BTWholesale API.<\/p>\n

We are aware of an issue impacting our communication with Openreach. This is having an impact with the broadband checker (some results may not pull through), address lookups, broadband ordering, broadband fault updates. We apologise for the disruption this may cause. We will confirm once we know the situation has been resolved.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We’ve put the question to Openreach and are waiting to hear back.<\/p>\n

UPDATE 11:25am<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to some additional sources, ISPs were notified about the problem at 9:51am today, which is impacting more than just checkers\/ordering systems. The situation is being treated as a P1 priority incident that appears to be impacting the whole BT<\/a> Group and extending to other things, such as KBD (Knowledge Based Diagnostics), which are failing or stuck in a running state \/ intermittent.<\/p>\n

BT Group’s internal communications channels are also impacted, which means they’re having to issue manual updates to their wholesale partners.<\/p>\n

UPDATE 12:19pm<\/strong><\/p>\n

Interestingly Virgin Media<\/a> has also paused all of their product sales due to the Openreach outage, which is odd as they run a completely different network and platform. We assume there must be some shared systems involved.<\/p>\n

UPDATE 12:30pm<\/strong><\/p>\n

Openreach have informed us that they’re aiming to get this fixed in the next 2-3 hours.<\/p>\n

The operator told ISPreview that the incident impacted connectivity between the Derby Data Centre<\/strong> and other key sites, which was traced to a network switch failure. BT Networks has dispatched an engineer to the site. The situation is said to have had a “low level impact<\/em>” on Portal order intake (“low level<\/em>” may be a matter of some debate, given how ISPs have responded), but B2B ordering and fault submissions remain operational.<\/p>\n

Engineer job intake, scheduling and workflow were also not impacted. Service continuity for core order and fault intake is also unaffected.<\/p>\n

UPDATE 3:43pm<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some sources have informed us that the problem should now be resolved. Repairs were apparently completed at 12:10pm today, but extra testing and monitoring was required before it could be confirmed as having worked.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
