{"id":4757,"date":"2013-12-05T09:26:43","date_gmt":"2013-12-05T09:26:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=4757"},"modified":"2013-12-05T09:26:43","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T09:26:43","slug":"just-8-uk-businesses-suffer-broadband-speeds-2mbps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/12\/just-8-uk-businesses-suffer-broadband-speeds-2mbps.html","title":{"rendered":"Just 8% of UK Businesses Suffer Broadband Speeds of Below 2Mbps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest annual E-Commerce and ICT Activity study from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statistics.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Office for National Statistics<\/a> has revealed that the vast majority (96%) of businesses in the United Kingdom have Internet access (95% use broadband) and (85.5%) of those continue to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">DSL<\/a> broadband technology. But superfast connectivity is growing.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The statistics, which are based on data gathered to the end of last year, reveal that 16.3% of firms have a narrowband <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/dialup\">dialup<\/a> or ISDN line, 85.5% connect via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">DSL<\/a>, 32% reported making use of \u2018other fixed Internet\u2019 broadband technologies (e.g. cable) and 57.6% made use of Mobile Broadband (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a>). As usual it should be remembered that many firms will use more than one technology, such as mobile and fixed lines.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of service performance it&#8217;s noted that the number of businesses subscribing to broadband with a connection speed between 30Mbps &#8211; 100Mbps has increased from 7% in 2011 to 10% in 2012. On top of that those with a speed of above 100Mbps now stand at 6% but sadly 8% are still forced onto a sub-2Mbps line.<\/p>\n<p>The most common connection speed for the smallest businesses was between 2Mbps and 10Mbps (43%). By contrast, the largest (1000 or more employees) businesses were most likely to use superfast broadband, with 38% of those connecting at speeds above 100Mbps.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" alt=\"business broadband speeds\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2013-internet-statistics\/business_broadband_speeds.gif\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Take note, it&#8217;s unclear from the report whether or not &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">DSL<\/a>&#8221; only refers to SDSL\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">ADSL<\/a>\/ADSL2+ or if it also includes superfast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> (VDSL) connectivity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The latest annual E-Commerce and ICT Activity study from the Office for National Statistics has revealed that the vast majority (96%) of businesses in the United Kingdom have Internet access (95% use broadband) and (85.5%) of those continue to use DSL broadband technology.
