Next week looks set to be a pivotal moment for SpaceX as the company will attempt to launch their Starship rocket again (Flight 14<\/em><\/a>), which will for the first time attempt to place Starship into a proper orbit around the Earth and then deliver 26 fully operational commercial Starlink<\/a> V3 broadband satellites (not test samples like before).<\/p>\n

Starlink<\/a> currently has around 11,100 satellites<\/strong><\/a> in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) \u2013 mostly at altitudes of between c.340-550km. Residential users in the UK pay from \u00a340 a month for the 100Mbps <\/strong>unlimited data plan, which also promises uploads of c.15-35Mbps and low latency connectivity (c.20ms). Faster packages exist at greater cost, while more restrictive (data capped) options are available for roaming (e.g. \u00a355 per month for 100GB of data).<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> By mid-2026 Starlink<\/a>\u2019s global network had 13 million consumer broadband customers (up from 6m in July 2025) and 22 million mobile (DTC) customers. The service had 110,000 customers in the UK as of July 2025 (up from 87,000 in 2024) \u2013 mostly in rural areas.<\/div>\n

At present most of Starlink’s satellites are first or second generation models. The new third generation (GEN3 or V3) satellites are much bigger and significantly more powerful, which means they are only commercially viable when launched on top of a massive rocket like Starship<\/strong>. SpaceX has in fact launched V3 satellites using Starship before as part of a recent test sample<\/a>, but they were not intended for commercial use and were later destroyed (intentionally).<\/p>\n

The V3 satellites are expected to deliver 10x the amount of broadband capacity and data density versus current generations, potentially offering up to gigabit speeds to consumers. As we\u2019ve previously reported, each v3 will be able to handle 1 Terabit per second<\/strong> (1000Gbps) of total downlink (up from 96Gbps on V2 Mini) and 160Gbps of uplink speed (shared capacity), with Starship<\/strong> eventually able to put c.60 of these into orbit per launch (here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

SpaceX Statement on Flight 14<\/strong><\/p>\n

The upcoming flight is planned to be the first to send Starship into orbit around Earth. Flight tests until this point have intentionally flown passively safe suborbital trajectories to maximize public safety while allowing for maximum learning. By going to orbit, the next phase of developing Starship to be fully and rapidly reusable can begin.<\/p>\n

This will also mark the first time we plan to deploy Starlink V3 satellites into the constellation, delivering a payload that will dramatically expand connectivity speeds and reliability around the world.<\/p>\n

Starship\u2019s initial orbital mission is expected to fly at an altitude approximately 275 km above Earth and complete approximately six orbits around the planet over the course of a nearly 10-hour flight, with splashdown targeted in the Pacific Ocean to the west of Chile.<\/p>\n

After deploying from Starship, the Starlink V3 satellites will unfold their antennas and deploy their solar arrays and make initial contact with the ground and the rest of the Starlink constellation via radio frequency and laser links. The satellites will then begin raising their orbits with their onboard thrusters. Following their on-orbit checkouts, the satellites should begin serving customers as soon as a few weeks after launch.<\/p>\n

Three of the satellites have been modified with a suite of cameras to scan Starship\u2019s heatshield and transmit imagery down to operators to continue testing methods of analyzing Starship\u2019s heatshield readiness for return to launch site on future missions.<\/p>\n

Several upgrades and experiments related to Starship\u2019s heatshield will also be tested, with some improvements derived directly from data gathered from the Flight 13 Starship as it floated in the Indian Ocean. They include additional retention mechanisms added to tiles in areas deemed to be at highest risk of falling off during ascent, addressing recently discovered areas that offer flow paths behind tiles for plasma, and flying multiple areas with a curved tile design that has shown the ability to reduce heating in the gaps between tiles. And finally, two tiles recovered from Ship 40 are planned to be reflown on Ship 41, marking the first tile reuse for Starship.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The 14th flight of Starship is currently preparing to launch as soon as Tuesday 22nd September 2026, pending regulatory approval. The 75-minute launch window will open at 7:15am CT or 1:15pm in British Summer Time (BST). But it’s not uncommon for weather and technical issues to cause delays at the last minute, so there’s a fair chance of this being pushed back to a later date.<\/p>\n

Suffice to say that this will be a much more expensive and important mission for SpaceX to get right than previous ones, where the odd “Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly<\/em>” was something the company could stomach as part of the testing and development process.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
