VodafoneThree has established a post-merger plan to invest <strong>\u00a311bn<\/strong> into upgrading the UK\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> mobile infrastructure and coverage over the next decade (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/06\/vodafonethree-outline-future-uk-network-plans-and-4g-to-5g-speed-boosts.html\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/06\/vodafone-clarifies-plans-for-joint-network-roaming-with-three-uk.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/08\/vodafone-and-three-uk-update-on-progress-of-joint-network-sharing.html\">here<\/a>). The combined business has previously committed to reach more than 99.95% of the UK&#8217;s population with their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> Standalone (5GSA \/ 5G+) network by 2034 and to push fixed wireless access (mobile home broadband) to 82% of households by 2030, among other things.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> Post-merger VodafoneThree was initially a private company \u2013 51% owned by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> and 49% owned by CK Hutchison (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a>). But that changed in May 2026 after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> reached a deal to \u201c<em>buy out<\/em>\u201d CKH from the joint venture for \u00a34.3bn (\u20ac4.9bn) \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/05\/vodafone-uk-takes-full-control-of-vodafonethree-as-ck-hutchison-exits-stake.html\">here<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ericsson.com\/en\/core-network\/5g-core\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new 5G Core network<\/a> will help to underpin that ambition and support their latest 5G+ enhancements, such as Network Slicing via their recently launched <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/09\/vodafone-uk-launch-pay-tv-and-5g-supermobile-broadband-service.html\">SuperMobile<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>add-on. The upgraded 5G Core is said to represent the second major phase of VodafoneThree\u2019s network transformation after they unified core-level sharing between both networks through their <strong>Multi-Operator Core Network<\/strong> (MOCN) technology, with its existing Multi-Operator Radio Access Network (MORAN) over a multi-vendor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> and 5G network.<\/p>\n<p>The new 5G Core will aim to start the evolution from that shared infrastructure and move it to a single, dedicated, and advanced core network from Ericsson, which they said has been &#8220;<em>designed to deliver a step-change in performance, reliability, and readiness for future innovation for Vodafone and Three customers<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Key benefits of the new core network include:<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u27a4 Foundation for 5G SA and network slicing:<\/strong> The cloud-native, programmable core is the engine for delivering value through 5G SA including differentiated connectivity services, such as network slicing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u27a4 Scalable capacity:<\/strong> Built to handle rapid data growth and support future needs as new services emerge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u27a4 Enhanced stability and lower latency: <\/strong>A distributed architecture brings the core network closer to customers, improving latency, while advanced resilience reduces downtime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u27a4 Operational agility:<\/strong> In-service software upgrades allow for infrastructure updates without disrupting customer traffic, enabling faster rollout of new features.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Hrvoje Jerkovic, Network Engineering Director at VodafoneThree, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe activation of our new cloud-native 5G core network is a major milestone in our journey to build the UK\u2019s best network.
