{"id":4818,"date":"2013-12-11T08:20:03","date_gmt":"2013-12-11T08:20:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=4818"},"modified":"2013-12-12T08:13:12","modified_gmt":"2013-12-12T08:13:12","slug":"next-gen-ultrafast-1gbps-g-fast-broadband-standard-achieves-consent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/12\/next-gen-ultrafast-1gbps-g-fast-broadband-standard-achieves-consent.html","title":{"rendered":"UPDATE Next Gen Ultrafast 1Gbps G.fast Broadband Standard Gains Consent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/ITU-T\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">International Telecommunication Union<\/a> (ITU-T) Study Group 15 has given its formal &#8220;<em>consent<\/em>&#8221; to the start of the final approval process for the next generation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/gfast\">G.fast<\/a> (aka &#8211; FTTC2 \/ ITU G.9700) broadband standard, which could one day deliver speeds of up to 1000Mbps (1Gbps) over some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> hybrid fibre (mixed copper and fibre optic) lines.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At present <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> uses <strong>Fibre-to-the-Cabinet<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>) technology to deliver speeds of <strong>up to 80Mbps<\/strong>, which works by replacing the existing copper cable between street cabinets and your local telephone exchange with a <strong>fibre optic<\/strong> line. The final copper line run from cabinets and into homes is then managed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/vdsl\">VDSL2<\/a> technology (similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">ADSL<\/a> but faster over short distances).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/gfast\">G.fast<\/a> adopts a similar approach but it&#8217;s designed to take even better advantage of the latest advancements (e.g. <strong>Vectoring<\/strong> &#8220;2.0&#8221; technology to reduce crosstalk interference), which would allow it to operate at speeds of <strong>up to 1Gbps<\/strong> (albeit over even shorter runs of copper cable &#8211; up to 250 metres). The most likely setup would be to combine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/gfast\">G.fast<\/a> with <strong>Fibre-to-the-Distribution-Point<\/strong> (FTTdp) technology, which takes the fibre optic cable even closer to homes (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/07\/a-look-at-future-fibre-to-the-distribution-point-broadband-isp-tech.html\" target=\"_blank\">read our full overview<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Dr Hamadoun I. Tour\u00e9, Secretary-General of the ITU, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">ADSL<\/a> in 1999 to G.fast in 2014, ITU-standardized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">DSL<\/a> solutions have multiplied access speeds by a factor of 125 over the past 15 years. It is to the credit of ITU\u2019s membership and the dedication of engineers working in our study groups that ITU standards continue to maximize returns on investment in legacy ICT infrastructure<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Les Brown, Associate Rapporteur of the G.fast Experts Group, added:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>G.fast provides the speed of fibre with the ease of installation of ADSL2. The solution is as compelling to consumers as it is to service providers, coexisting with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/vdsl\">VDSL2<\/a> and complementing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a><\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> recently confirmed a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/10\/bt-confirm-uk-plan-trial-1gbps-capable-g-fast-fttdp-broadband.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>plan to trial G.fast<\/strong><\/a> technology and has openly spoken about top download speeds of <strong>up to 800Mbps<\/strong> (200Mbps upload) being possible for some super short lines (e.g. around 50 metres), although in reality the mass market headline figure is probably more likely to start at around <strong>250Mbps<\/strong> but it&#8217;s still far too early to say for sure.<\/p>\n<p>The latest &#8220;<em>consent<\/em>&#8221; stage is thus an important milestone because it marks the formal start of the ITU-T&#8217;s approval process, which is now expected to complete by <strong>Q3 2014<\/strong> (a little later than originally expected but not far off the mark). Most importantly it means that hardware manufacturers can now begin development of the first draft of G.fast kit and the first proper gear should then surface in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>In other words you probably won&#8217;t be seeing G.fast in the mass UK consumer market until around <strong>2016\/17<\/strong> and that&#8217;s assuming BT can overcome a variety of potential technical and cost problems with its integration. The idea of G.fast is to deliver faster speeds without going to the massive <strong>\u00a320-30bn<\/strong> expense of having to deploy a full national fibre optic (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a>\/P) network, although you do still bring the fibre optic side closer to homes via FTTdp.<\/p>\n<p>In other words G.fast might be a fair bit cheaper than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a> but it would still be a very slow, complex and expensive upgrade to deploy. In the meantime existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> technology will continue to be upgraded with improvements like Vectoring (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/09\/vectoring-trials-begin-as-bt-looks-to-improve-uk-fttc-broadband-isp-speeds.html\" target=\"_blank\">currently in trial<\/a>) and possibly a greater allocation of radio spectrum (<strong>30MHz<\/strong> \/ Profile 30a [currently 17Mhz]), which could push top speeds <strong>beyond 100Mbps<\/strong> but at this stage nothing is confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>As a side note it&#8217;s worth mentioning that G.fast uses a &#8220;<em>parasitical power<\/em>&#8221; setup, which means that it&#8217;s designed to <strong>work without mains power<\/strong> by drawing current from your own modem or router device.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 12th December 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Added a comment from the ITU above.
