{"id":48509,"date":"2026-10-23T08:27:36","date_gmt":"2026-10-23T07:27:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=48509"},"modified":"2026-10-23T08:46:24","modified_gmt":"2026-10-23T07:46:24","slug":"portsmouth-water-adopt-openreachs-uk-fibre-broadband-network-to-detect-leaks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/10\/portsmouth-water-adopt-openreachs-uk-fibre-broadband-network-to-detect-leaks.html","title":{"rendered":"Portsmouth Water adopt Openreach&#8217;s UK fibre broadband network to detect leaks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.portsmouthwater.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portsmouth Water<\/a> has today announced that they&#8217;re set to become the latest utility company to deploy Lightsonic&#8217;s technology, which works by harnessing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a>\u2019s (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>) existing Fibre-to-the-Premises (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) based broadband network across the UK to help detect underground water leaks in pipes.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As we\u2019ve reported before (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/09\/southern-water-harness-openreachs-uk-fibre-broadband-network-to-detect-leaks.html\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/05\/scientists-improve-earthquake-detection-via-subsea-fibre-cables.html\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/07\/scientists-use-fibre-optic-broadband-cables-to-detect-earthquakes.html\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/new-technology-helps-subsea-fibre-optic-cables-to-detect-sabotage.html\">here<\/a>), fibre optic cables aren\u2019t only useful for transmitting data using pulses of laser light. Such cables can also be used to detect tiny changes in light signals (e.g. polarisation) as they move along the cable, which can help to monitor Earthquakes, Tsunamis and even to locate underground water leaks via <strong>Distributed Acoustic Sensing<\/strong> (DAS) or <strong>Distributed Fibre Optic Sensing<\/strong> (DFOS).<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> England and Wales currently lose c.3 billion litres of treated water daily through leaks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a>\u2019s full fibre (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) broadband network covers around 24 million UK premises and they\u2019re aiming to reach 25m by December 2026, before targeting \u201c<em>up to<\/em>\u201d 30m by 2030.<\/div>\n<p>Earlier this year we reported on how Lightsonic and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/03\/openreach-trial-uses-uk-broadband-network-to-detect-100-water-leaks.html\">trialling such a technology<\/a> in the UK with <strong>Affinity Water<\/strong>. The service has since expanded and we understand that it enables technicians to find four times as many leaks and is already saving 1.2 million litres per day per 100km every year. Last month also saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southernwater.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southern Water<\/a> join the service, which supplies an area of c.4,450 sq. km and serves 2.7 million customers.<\/p>\n<p>The latest development is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portsmouthwater.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portsmouth Water<\/a> have also signed up to harness the system and intend to begin adopting it in <strong>December 2026<\/strong>. Lightsonic states that their technology can help to pinpoint potential leaks to within 10 metres, provided the leak is occurring near to Openreach&#8217;s fibre cables of course (underground utilities often run in relatively close proximity).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" style=\"padding: 0px; width: 100%; border-radius: 6px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2026-article-illustrations\/Lightsonic-water-detection-map-on-Openreach-broadband-network.webp\" alt=\"Lightsonic-water-detection-map-on-Openreach-broadband-network\"><\/p>\n<p>England has an ageing water network with 60% of water mains being 45 years old and 13% more than 100, which are sadly prone to leaks.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Trevor Linney, Openreach\u2019s Director of Network Technology, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re seeing growing interest from water companies in using fibre sensing technology in this way. By combining Lightsonic&#8217;s technology with Openreach&#8217;s Full Fibre network, water companies can gain greater visibility of their assets, helping them reduce leakage and manage resources more sustainably. We&#8217;re pleased to support Portsmouth Water in adopting this new approach.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Bob Taylor, CEO of Portsmouth Water, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cReducing leakage is a key priority for us, and identifying and repairing leaks as soon as possible is essential to achieving that. This technology will help us detect leaks more quickly, find more leaks across our network and carry out repairs sooner, helping to reduce water loss. We\u2019re excited to be working with Lightsonic and Openreach and look forward to seeing the results.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One catch is that this presently only works across &#8220;<em>spare<\/em>&#8221; (unused) fibres within Openreach&#8217;s network. The future plan still envisages this solution being expanded to work across Openreach\u2019s active fibre network too, rather than having to install a dedicated sensing fibre network (more expensive), although this hasn&#8217;t happened yet.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s worth remembering that Openreach aren\u2019t the only fibre game in town, and it\u2019s possible that we might also see rival networks \u2013 belonging to several different operators \u2013 being harnessed in the future in order to further improve such systems or to provide a bit of competition.
