{"id":491,"date":"2012-03-22T08:00:41","date_gmt":"2012-03-22T08:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=491"},"modified":"2012-03-22T08:03:59","modified_gmt":"2012-03-22T08:03:59","slug":"first-arctic-submarine-fibre-optic-undersea-cable-to-boost-uk-internet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/03\/first-arctic-submarine-fibre-optic-undersea-cable-to-boost-uk-internet.html","title":{"rendered":"First Arctic Submarine Fibre Optic Undersea Cable to Boost UK Internet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new <strong>Russian Optical Trans-Arctic Submarine Cable System<\/strong> (ROTACS) from the <a href=\"http:\/\/polarnetproject.ru\" target=\"_new\">Polarnet Project<\/a>, which will boost international broadband internet connectivity to the UK, is about to become the first <strong>submarine fibre optic cable<\/strong> to cross the <strong>Arctic Ocean<\/strong> with a run between London and Japan \/ China that crosses the coast of Northern Europe and Russia.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nConstruction of the new fibre, which uses the latest developments in optical transmission technology (e.g. <strong>100Gbps<\/strong>), is due to <strong>commence in August 2012<\/strong> and has only been made possible by the growing <strong>retreat of sea ice<\/strong>. But the <strong>trans-Arctic geographic route<\/strong> is also extremely treacherous and Engineers are likely to face many challenges, such as the ever present danger of ship sinking icebergs. This will require specially adapted cable ships.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time ROTACS will be <strong>less susceptible to damage<\/strong>, such as cable cuts caused by fishing trawlers and ships dragging their anchors. This will be less of an issue for the new cable because few ships could brave the ice packed Arctic waters. On the other hand if a problem does occur then conceivably the cable might be significantly harder to reach and repair.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile two further fibre optic cables (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcticfibre.com\" target=\"_new\">Arctic Fibre<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcticlink.com\" target=\"_new\">Arctic Link<\/a>) are planned through the <strong>North-West Passage<\/strong> (above <strong>North America<\/strong>), which will improve internet connectivity between the UK and Canada \/ USA \/ Asia. The Arctic Fibre project won&#8217;t get started until at least <strong>Q3-2013<\/strong>, while Arctic Link expects to begin work in <strong>2014<\/strong>.
