{"id":5074,"date":"2014-01-09T07:51:11","date_gmt":"2014-01-09T07:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=5074"},"modified":"2014-01-09T08:53:36","modified_gmt":"2014-01-09T08:53:36","slug":"vodafone-uk-ee-bring-mobile-broadband-channel-tunnel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/01\/vodafone-uk-ee-bring-mobile-broadband-channel-tunnel.html","title":{"rendered":"Vodafone UK and EE Bring Mobile Broadband to the Channel Tunnel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mobile operators <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> have signed a new 10-year deal with Eurotunnel that will make their 2G and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> based voice and Mobile Broadband services available to commuters travelling 100 metres below sea level on trains along the Channel Tunnel (North Tunnel) route that connects the UK to France (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> will follow later).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Some <strong>20 million passengers<\/strong> travel along the world&#8217;s longest undersea tunnel each year and delivering the new service to them has not been an easy task, with the work apparently needing to &#8220;<em>overcome a series of technical challenges<\/em>&#8220;. The new service will benefit passengers of both Le Shuttle and high speed (HS) passenger trains.<\/p>\n<p>Eurotunnel also has equivalent agreements with the French mobile operators, Bouygues Telecom, Orange and SFR, which cooperated for the successful installation of <strong>GSM-P<\/strong> services in the <strong>South Running Tunnel<\/strong> during 2012.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Fotis Karonis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>&#8217;s CTO, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>We\u2019re proud to offer customers a superfast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> service when they\u2019re travelling from the UK into Europe. It\u2019s another technology first for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>, and it\u2019s one that will make a big difference to business workers and people going away on holiday. Being connected is such an important part of travelling now and this will be another route we\u2019ve covered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a>, making a huge difference to millions of customers who can now make the most of their journey time<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sadly the press release doesn&#8217;t contain a lot of detail, although it&#8217;s stated that the 2G and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> services will go live in the North Tunnel route during <strong>March 2014<\/strong>. Meanwhile superfast 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband connectivity is expected to follow sometime between <strong>summer or autumn 2014<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Customers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> might now be starting to feel a bit left out but it&#8217;s reported elsewhere that Eurotunnel has asked them to get involved. The project itself will require around <strong>\u00a35 million<\/strong> from the UK mobile operators, with more coming from Eurotunnel, which still represents a fairly small slice of the<strong> \u00a3802m<\/strong> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> spent acquiring the widest portfolio of 4G mobile spectrum in last year\u2019s auction of new capacity by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> has similarly pledged to deliver 4G\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> indoor coverage to 98% of the UK population by 2015.
