{"id":5337,"date":"2014-02-03T08:42:11","date_gmt":"2014-02-03T08:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=5337"},"modified":"2014-02-03T08:42:11","modified_gmt":"2014-02-03T08:42:11","slug":"three-uk-ee-invest-gbp1bn-shared-4g-mobile-broadband-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/02\/three-uk-ee-invest-gbp1bn-shared-4g-mobile-broadband-network.html","title":{"rendered":"Three UK and EE Invest GBP1bn into Shared 4G Mobile Broadband Network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mobile operators <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-43\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"ee home broadband\">EE<\/a> (T-Mobile and Orange UK) and <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-80\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"three uk\">Three UK<\/a> have agreed to expand their 50\/50 network sharing deal, through the umbrella organisation called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mbnl.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mobile-Broadband Network Limited<\/a> (MBNL), with an extra investment of \u00a31 billion to improve <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-116 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"4g\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_mobile.php\">4G<\/a> (LTE) based Mobile Broadband coverage and cut costs.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At present <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-43\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"ee home broadband\">EE<\/a> expects its <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-116 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"4g\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_mobile.php\">4G<\/a> network to reach 98% of the population by the end of 2014 and <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-80\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"three uk\">Three UK<\/a> intends to reach the same target, albeit one year later. Both operators are making use of the <strong>1800MHz<\/strong> and <strong>800MHz<\/strong> radio frequency bands for their service, although EE also has a slice of <strong>2.6GHz<\/strong> to play with.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/7c6955c2-89b1-11e3-abc4-00144feab7de.html#axzz2sEvFoccV\" target=\"_blank\">FT<\/a> (paywall), the new deal will accelerate the operators existing roll-out plans and the greater proportion of <strong>network sharing<\/strong> (i.e. mast infrastructure and transmission costs etc.) should also help to cut costs. But unlike before the revised deal means that there will actually be greater separation between the networks in other areas.<\/p>\n<p>In particular Three UK are offering access to their &#8220;<em>all-you-can-eat<\/em>&#8221; style 4G network &#8220;<em>at no extra cost<\/em>&#8220;, while EE prefers to charge a premium and caps their data allowances under stricter terms. As a result the FT claims that the antennas, spectrum and the core network will be different for the two groups so that service quality\u00a0is a unique measure\u00a0for each\u00a0(note: it&#8217;s unclear precisely what the FT means by different spectrum as both have neighbouring coverage in the same bands).<\/p>\n<p>Overall it&#8217;s understood that EE are investing <strong>\u00a31.4bn<\/strong> to build their 4G network, while Three UK intends to spend <strong>\u00a3500m<\/strong>. The \u00a31bn mooted above is believed to be coming from these two existing commitments. Ultimately today&#8217;s move, given the existing agreement, was perhaps inevitable and it should help to keep both operators competitive. <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-68\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"o2\">O2<\/a> and <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-90\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"vodafone\">Vodafone<\/a> have a similar network sharing agreement, although their packages are not as different as Three UK and EE\u2019s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mobile operators EE (T-Mobile and Orange UK) and Three UK have agreed to expand their 50\/50 network sharing deal, through the umbrella organisation called Mobile-Broadband Network Limited (MBNL), with an extra investment of \u00a31 billion to improve 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband coverage and cut costs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":4325,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[61,405,60,63],"class_list":["post-5337","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-4g","tag-ee","tag-mobile-broadband","tag-three-uk"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
