{"id":552,"date":"2012-03-29T09:53:12","date_gmt":"2012-03-29T08:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=552"},"modified":"2012-03-29T09:53:12","modified_gmt":"2012-03-29T08:53:12","slug":"uk-white-space-broadband-wireless-trial-speeds-fail-to-impress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/03\/uk-white-space-broadband-wireless-trial-speeds-fail-to-impress.html","title":{"rendered":"UK White Space Broadband Wireless Trial Speeds Fail to Impress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Early feedback from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s trial of &#8216;<strong>White Space<\/strong>&#8216; (<em>IEEE 802.22<\/em>) wireless broadband technology on the <strong>Isle of Bute<\/strong> suggests that the service, which delivers internet access by making use of the unused radio spectrum that exists between <strong>Digital TV<\/strong> channels, still has a lot of problems to overcome, not least in terms of its sporadic performance.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nIn theory the 802.22 specification suggests that download speeds of up to <strong>22Mbps per channel<\/strong> (Megabits per second) could be possible and some UK trials claim to have reached around 16Mbps, which is incidentally a long way off the UK&#8217;s chosen definition for superfast broadband (<strong>24Mbps+<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>But separate reports from both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcpro.co.uk\/news\/373807\/bt-white-space-works-if-you-re-not-hung-up-on-speed\" target=\"_blank\">PC Pro<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-17522051\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a> today found that the service, which is complicated to deliver due to the ever changing spectrum and the <strong>risk of causing interference<\/strong> to DTV services, could struggle to deliver its top speeds.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Chris Gibbs of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Although it has the same characteristics as copper &#8211; the further you go the worse the signal gets &#8211; it goes a bit further, and that&#8217;s the advantage<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At present <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s implementation claims to be offering speeds of up to <strong>10Mbps per channel<\/strong>, which will soon be upgraded to 15Mbps, but this reduces down to a maximum of just 4Mbps when 6km away from the transmitter. New tests at various points on the Isle of Bute showed speeds <strong>varying between just 1.5Mbps and 6Mbps<\/strong> (the latter was recorded within sight of BT&#8217;s mast).<\/p>\n<p>In fairness White Space solutions are designed to target the last 10% of the UK where the government has so far only committed to a minimum download speed of just <strong>2Mbps for all<\/strong> (<em>Universal Service Commitment<\/em>), which is a very low target. In addition White Space tech appears to deliver strong upload speed that is, in some cases, symmetrical. That makes it good for video conferencing and other upload dependent tasks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> is currently preparing to consult on a <strong>Draft Statutory Instrument<\/strong> for making white space devices <strong>licence exempt<\/strong>, which could result in the first commercial UK services arrive sometime next year.
