{"id":578,"date":"2012-04-02T08:54:12","date_gmt":"2012-04-02T07:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=578"},"modified":"2012-04-02T09:00:08","modified_gmt":"2012-04-02T08:00:08","slug":"shetland-islands-connect-local-superfast-fibre-optic-link-to-shefa2-cable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/04\/shetland-islands-connect-local-superfast-fibre-optic-link-to-shefa2-cable.html","title":{"rendered":"Shetland Islands Connect Local Superfast Fibre Optic Link to SHEFA2 Cable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shetlandtele.com\" target=\"_blank\">Shetland Telecom<\/a>, which was setup by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shetland.gov.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Shetland Islands Council<\/a> (SIC) to develop better telecom and superfast broadband internet access services in the remote <strong>Shetland Islands<\/strong> (North of Scotland, UK), has successfully connected up its new <strong>fibre optic<\/strong> infrastructure to the undersea <strong>SHEFA-2<\/strong> cable that links the Faroe Islands to mainland Scotland (UK).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nThe <strong>SHEFA2 Interconnect Project<\/strong> intends to ensure that islanders benefit from access to a &#8220;<em>resilient, reliable and affordable backhaul<\/em>&#8220;, which should be significantly faster than the current <strong>Microwave<\/strong> (wireless) link. This will also help to support the council&#8217;s <strong>Digital Shetland<\/strong> strategy, which aims to ensure that 80% of Shetland&#8217;s communities are connected to a fibre optic backbone by March 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The SIC also wants 90% of the islands population to be within reach of a superfast broadband service (i.e. faster than 24Mbps) by the same date.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Shetland Telecom Statement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Delighted to announce that we are now connected to Faroese Telecom&#8217;s SHEFA2 fibre optic cable. We should be fully operational in the next couple of weeks<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One of the services that should benefit from today&#8217;s news is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Quasarnet\" target=\"_blank\">Quasarnet<\/a>, a community group that is working to deliver <strong>Fibre-to-the-Home<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a>) based superfast broadband to the Gulberwick, Quarff, Cunningsburgh and Sandwick areas of southern Shetland.
