{"id":6245,"date":"2014-03-11T13:28:59","date_gmt":"2014-03-11T13:28:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=6245"},"modified":"2014-03-11T13:32:14","modified_gmt":"2014-03-11T13:32:14","slug":"bt-overtake-virgin-media-top-netflixs-uk-isp-broadband-speed-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/03\/bt-overtake-virgin-media-top-netflixs-uk-isp-broadband-speed-index.html","title":{"rendered":"BT Overtake Virgin Media to Top Netflix&#8217;s UK ISP Broadband Speed Index"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest ISP Speed Index update for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.netflix.com\" target=\"_blank\">Netflix<\/a>&#8216;s unlimited Internet movie and TV video streaming service has revealed that <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-145\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"BT\">BT<\/a> is now at the top of the table with an average\u00a0speed of 2.85Mbps (Megabits per second), although they&#8217;re only very marginally ahead of <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-65\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"virgin media\">Virgin Media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Generally speaking we don&#8217;t pay much attention to Netflix&#8217;s monthly reports, unless something interesting happens, and that&#8217;s because their <a href=\"http:\/\/ispspeedindex.netflix.com\/uk\" target=\"_blank\">Speed Index<\/a> is only capable of reflecting the average performance of all Netflix-based video streams on each ISP. In other words, it&#8217;s useless as a measure of general end-user internet connectivity speed or capability but sadly some won&#8217;t report it that way.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the reason for this is because video streaming speeds can be affected by all sorts of factors, such as the dynamic nature of different video codecs, the performance of your home network (e.g. <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-124 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"wifi\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_wireless.php\">wifi<\/a>), ISP traffic management measures and video quality among many other things.<\/p>\n<p>As a result the differences in score tend to be small because you&#8217;re looking more at the performance of Netflix&#8217;s own streams and servers, which all follow the same set of quality and codecs, rather than that of the ISP itself. But sometimes the general trends can still reveal problems with ISP traffic prioritisation and or peering \/ capacity to Netflix&#8217;s CDN servers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>NetflixUK \u2013 Major ISP Rankings (February 2014)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>1 \u2013 <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-145\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"BT\">BT<\/a> 2.85Mbps (up from 2.66Mbps in Dec 2013)<\/p>\n<p>2 \u2013 <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-65\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"virgin media\">Virgin Media<\/a> 2.81Mbps (down from 2.99Mbps in Dec 2013)<\/p>\n<p>3 \u2013 <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-86\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"Sky Broadband\">Sky Broadband<\/a> 2.49Mbps (down from 2.44Mbps in Dec 2013) [tied]<\/p>\n<p>4 \u2013 <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-59\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"talktalk\">TalkTalk<\/a> 2.49Mbps (up from 2.35Mbps in Dec 2013) [tied]<\/p>\n<p>5 \u2013 <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-43\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"ee home broadband\">EE<\/a> 1.93Mbps (down from 2.32Mbps in Dec 2013)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ideally we&#8217;d like to see Netflix produce some useful data, such as a table that shows the difference in performance between HD and Standard Definition (SD) video streams, preferably alongside one that revealed the speed during different periods of the day (e.g. peak and off-peak) between ISPs.
