{"id":6451,"date":"2014-03-31T12:20:15","date_gmt":"2014-03-31T11:20:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=6451"},"modified":"2014-03-31T12:20:15","modified_gmt":"2014-03-31T11:20:15","slug":"ofcom-boost-base-station-power-1800mhz-based-3g-4g-mobile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/03\/ofcom-boost-base-station-power-1800mhz-based-3g-4g-mobile.html","title":{"rendered":"Ofcom to Boost UK Base Station Power for 1800MHz Based 3G and 4G Mobile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The communications regulator has today proposed to boost the maximum permissible &#8220;<em>base station transmit power<\/em>&#8221; in the 1800MHz radio spectrum band for <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-115 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"3g\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_mobile.php\">3G<\/a> (UMTS) and <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-116 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"4g\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_mobile.php\">4G<\/a> (LTE \/ WiMAX) based Mobile Broadband and voice services by +3dB, which could improve coverage and capacity.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s understood that <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-133 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"ofcom\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\">Ofcom<\/a> received requests from <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-43\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"ee home broadband\">EE<\/a>, <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-80\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"three uk\">Three UK<\/a>, <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-68\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"o2\">O2<\/a> (Telef\u00f3nica UK) and <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-90\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"vodafone\">Vodafone<\/a> to implement the power increase under the related Public Wireless Network licence(s). <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-133 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"ofcom\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\">Ofcom<\/a> noted that the 3dB boost could improve coverage, capacity, the ability to penetrate deeper into buildings and provide &#8220;<em>flexibility to coverage and traffic management, load balancing and efficient handovers between different network layers<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Licences for use of the 1800 MHz band are held by:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-68\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"o2\">O2<\/a>: 1805.1 to 1810.9 MHz<br \/>\n\u2022 <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-90\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"vodafone\">Vodafone<\/a>: 1810.9 to 1816.7 MHz<br \/>\n\u2022 <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-80\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"three uk\">Three UK<\/a>: 1816.7 to 1831.7 MHz<br \/>\n\u2022 <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-43\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"ee home broadband\">EE<\/a>: 1831.7 to 1876.7 MHz<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Outcome of the 3dB boost:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 65 dBm per carrier for UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System); and<br \/>\n\u2022 65 dBm per 5 MHz for LTE (Long Term Evolution) and WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ofcom said, &#8220;<em>We do not consider that allowing a higher maximum permitted base station transmit power will result in any detriment to competition or other spectrum use<\/em>&#8220;.
