{"id":6457,"date":"2014-04-01T08:11:03","date_gmt":"2014-04-01T07:11:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=6457"},"modified":"2014-04-01T08:11:03","modified_gmt":"2014-04-01T07:11:03","slug":"rcbf-grants-300k-boost-bt-fttc-broadband-redcar-cleveland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/04\/rcbf-grants-300k-boost-bt-fttc-broadband-redcar-cleveland.html","title":{"rendered":"RCBF Grants \u00a3300k to Boost BT FTTC Broadband in Redcar and Cleveland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government&#8217;s \u00a320m Rural Community Broadband Fund (RCBF) has awarded another grant of \u00a3300,000 to help boost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s &#8220;<em>fibre broadband<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>) coverage in the rural North Yorkshire (England) borough of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Redcar and Cleveland<\/a> (specifically East Cleveland).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The new grant will effectively be merged into the existing contribution from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> (\u00a3170k) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bduk\" target=\"_blank\">Broadband Delivery UK<\/a> office (\u00a3260k &#8211; this was also matched by the local council), which means that a total of <strong>\u00a3990,000<\/strong> will now be available to improve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> broadband availability in the area.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/11114595.Superfast_broadband_heading_to_villages_across_east_Cleveland\/\" target=\"_blank\">Northern Echo<\/a>, the new funding means that 93% of Redcar and Cleveland should now gain access to a superfast broadband (<strong>25Mbps+<\/strong>) service by 2016 and the remaining areas will receive at least 2Mbps (note: the Northern Echo calls this &#8220;<em>2MB\/s<\/em>&#8221; but of course it&#8217;s actually Megabits and NOT MegaBytes).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Christopher Massey, Council Member for Environment and Rural Affairs, said: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>As part of the bidding process we asked people in east Cleveland to register their interest in the scheme, to help build the borough\u2019s case. There was a fantastic response with as many as 90 per cent of people supporting the bid in some areas. This support was crucial to the success of the bid<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It should be said that Redcar and Cleveland aren&#8217;t the first to link an RCBF grant into their primary BDUK scheme, with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.durham.gov.uk\/pages\/Service.aspx?ServiceId=8540\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Durham<\/a> and Tees Valley project in North East England recently opting to do the same (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/03\/durham-uk-extend-bduk-bt-superfast-broadband-coverage-96.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile many smaller ISP (altnet) projects continue to struggle to secure a grant, not least with the issue of identifying whether or not their own schemes conflict with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>\/BDUK plan.
