{"id":6556,"date":"2014-04-11T13:10:52","date_gmt":"2014-04-11T12:10:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=6556"},"modified":"2014-04-11T13:10:52","modified_gmt":"2014-04-11T12:10:52","slug":"o2-uk-bring-4g-mobile-broadband-19m-people-191-towns-cities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/04\/o2-uk-bring-4g-mobile-broadband-19m-people-191-towns-cities.html","title":{"rendered":"O2 Bring 4G Mobile Broadband to 41% of People in 191 UK Towns and Cities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mobile operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> (O24G) has announced that their new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> (LTE at 800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network can now cover 41% of the United Kingdom&#8217;s outdoor population (around 33% for indoor users) in 191 Towns and Cities, which apparently equates to about 20 million people.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The operators new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> network, which launched last August 2013 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/08\/o2-uk-confirm-4g-mobile-broadband-launch-for-29th-august-2013.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>), has also recently connected its one millionth customer and they expect to have <strong>upgraded 25% of their masts<\/strong> to support the new service by the end of 2014. As a result <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> claims that its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> users gobbled more data in the first 6 months of operation than their entire network carried between 2000 and 2008.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, an extra <strong>\u00a316 million<\/strong> has also been committed to help bring data coverage to places that have never had it before. This is probably related to the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> won <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s <strong>coverage obligation lot<\/strong> for the 800MHz band, which obliges them to roll-out Mobile Broadband of &#8220;<em>indoor reception<\/em>&#8221; to at least 98% of the UK population (99% outdoors) by the end of 2017 (note: most are running 1-2 years ahead of that target).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Derek McManus, COO of Telefonica UK (O2), said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Last year we launched our 4G network and undertook the fastest network roll-out in the history of our company. This year we\u2019re continuing that roll-out and concurrently modernising our 2G and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> networks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Building a great network isn\u2019t just about bringing faster speeds to people that already have coverage. It\u2019s vital that we also bring seamless coverage to people that have never had it before. Investment in all layers of our network is key to ensuring customers receive a great experience, whether that\u2019s in streaming live goals in the pub or receiving critical business information.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We continue to invest the equivalent of \u00a31.5million in our network every single day to offer seamless connectivity for our customers across 2G, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a>, 4G and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">Wifi<\/a>. and remain focused on delivering an experience that exceeds our customers\u2019 expectations<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At this point it&#8217;s useful to note that O2 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> have a kind of <strong>network sharing agreement<\/strong> in place, which allows them to &#8220;<em>pool the basic parts of their network infrastructure<\/em>&#8221; in order to create one national grid that can support two independent and competing networks.
