{"id":6673,"date":"2014-04-30T09:49:33","date_gmt":"2014-04-30T08:49:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=6673"},"modified":"2014-04-30T09:49:33","modified_gmt":"2014-04-30T08:49:33","slug":"bt-estimates-80-percent-uk-fibre-broadband-coverage-spring-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/04\/bt-estimates-80-percent-uk-fibre-broadband-coverage-spring-2015.html","title":{"rendered":"BT Estimates 80 Percent UK Total Fibre Broadband Footprint by Spring 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A rough estimate released by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> Wholesale earlier this year has predicted that the operators\u00a0total &#8220;<em>fibre broadband<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) network\u00a0footprint will increase to reach 80% of the United Kingdom by Spring 2015.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At present <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> ended Q4-2013 with its superfast capable and <strong>Fibre-to-the-Cabinet<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>) dominated roll-out of &#8220;<em>fibre broadband<\/em>&#8221; connectivity being made available to 18 million UK premises, which put them just shy of meeting their <strong>\u00a32.5bn<\/strong> commercial deployment target for 66% coverage during spring 2014 (19 million homes and businesses).<\/p>\n<p>The imminent results for Q1-2014 are thus likely to show the first target as being all but met and meanwhile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> has already indicated to us that its commercial deployment is now expected to continue on for a bit longer beyond the spring 2014 period&#8217;s target for two thirds of the country.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time the Government&#8217;s \u00a31.2bn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bduk\" target=\"_blank\">Broadband Delivery UK<\/a> programme will also be working with BT to ensure that 95% of the UK can access a fixed line superfast broadband (<strong>25Mbps+<\/strong>)\u00a0service by 2017 (note: the BDUK target includes other networks, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>, although BT&#8217;s overall deployment covers many of the same areas). Prior to that BDUK anticipated coverage reaching around 90% by the end of 2015.<\/p>\n<p>But until now very little has been known about the expectations for coverage of BT&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>\/P network, beyond the public 66% target. However a recent document seen by ISPreview.co.uk reveals that BT are predicting their <strong>total fibre footprint<\/strong>, taking non-commercial areas into account as well as commercial, will extend to 80% by Spring 2015 (this is referenced alongside a figure of <strong>21.5 million premises<\/strong> by <strong>March 2015<\/strong>). Another figure of 85% is also hinted at but not qualified in the document.<\/p>\n<p>However it should be stressed that this\u00a0is considered a rough estimate, which has been provided to the ISP industry in order to help them plan their own investments and thus BT are keen that it shouldn&#8217;t be viewed as an official target for the company.<\/p>\n<p>So take this with a pinch of salt\u00a0because sometimes such data can be misleading, much like\u00a0how BT&#8217;s &#8220;<em>Better Future<\/em>&#8221; programme last year caused confusion when it talked about an &#8220;<em>aim: to provide nine out of ten premises in the country with access to fibre based products and services by 2020<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/05\/confusion-as-bt-put-90-uk-fibre-broadband-goal-back-from-2017-to-2020.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).
