{"id":6685,"date":"2014-05-01T07:56:36","date_gmt":"2014-05-01T06:56:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=6685"},"modified":"2014-05-01T09:50:03","modified_gmt":"2014-05-01T08:50:03","slug":"virgin-media-uk-seeks-sell-shelved-copper-adsl2-broadband-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/05\/virgin-media-uk-seeks-sell-shelved-copper-adsl2-broadband-business.html","title":{"rendered":"UPD Virgin Media UK Could Sell Shelved Copper ADSL2 Broadband Business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cable operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.libertyglobal.com\/pdf\/press-release\/Virgin-Media-Q4-2013-Investor-Release-FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Liberty Global<\/a>) has reportedly put up a tentative FOR SALE sign next to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/02\/virgin-media-uk-grows-reach-4-51m-broadband-isp-subscribers.html\" target=\"_blank\">135,000 customers<\/a> on their old copper-based <em>Virgin National Broadband<\/em> (Virgin.net \/ ADSL2+) platform, which closed to new subscribers in October 2013 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/10\/virgin-media-uk-stops-selling-copper-based-adsl2-broadband.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>) and has continued to decline from its peak of 275,900 users in early 2011.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Virgin National service had originally been intended to complement the operator\u2019s cable platform and thus give Virgin a reach into non-cable areas, although instead it often felt like the forgotten child and received very little attention from its parent. Similarly the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">ADSL<\/a> based services, which offered very variable top speeds of up to around <strong>20Mbps<\/strong>, could never keep up with Virgin&#8217;s cable (<strong>EuroDOCSIS<\/strong>) platform that can now deliver top speeds of <strong>152Mbps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The operator did attempt a brief refresh when it upgraded part of the platform from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">ADSL<\/a> to ADSL2+ services in 2009 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/story\/2009\/08\/04\/virgin-media-uk-boosts-non-cable-adsl-broadband-isp-speeds.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>), yet after a peaking in 2011 it soon returned to a trend of broad decline. At one point there were even rumours of a plan to launch a new range of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> based superfast broadband packages but these evaporated when the Virgin National service was shelved.<\/p>\n<p>At the time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> said that they wanted to &#8220;<em>focus on developing services on our next generation cable network<\/em>&#8221; and would continue to provide &#8220;<em>services and support for all of our existing National customers<\/em>&#8220;, although any potential subscribers in non-cable areas would instead now be redirected to find an alternative ISP.<\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s perhaps with little surprise that we read a report in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/735be126-d05f-11e3-af2b-00144feabdc0.html#axzz30RNNSqZO\" target=\"_blank\">FT<\/a> (paywall), which claims that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> is currently &#8216;considering&#8217; a <strong>sale of the business<\/strong> and has even sent &#8220;<em>information packs<\/em>&#8221; with the relevant details out to &#8220;<em>prospective buyers<\/em>&#8221; (e.g. ISPs like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a> etc.). However it&#8217;s understood that Virgin hasn&#8217;t yet committed to this path.<\/p>\n<p>ISPreview.co.uk has requested a comment from the operator, although they chose not to comment on the FT&#8217;s piece. Incidentally Virgin Media\u2019s next round of financial results are due out soon and we wouldn\u2019t be surprised to see yet another sharp decline in their Virgin National base, which is now a normal occurrence.
