{"id":7000,"date":"2014-06-19T09:39:45","date_gmt":"2014-06-19T08:39:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=7000"},"modified":"2014-06-19T09:39:45","modified_gmt":"2014-06-19T08:39:45","slug":"virgin-trains-promise-free-superfast-wifi-west-coast-customers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/06\/virgin-trains-promise-free-superfast-wifi-west-coast-customers.html","title":{"rendered":"Virgin Trains Promise FREE &#8220;Superfast&#8221; WiFi for all Customers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Virgin Trains has today pledged to provide free &#8220;<em>superfast<\/em>&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> wireless Internet access &#8220;<em>for all customers<\/em>&#8221; after signing a major new deal for the West Coast franchise with the Government&#8217;s Department for Transport (DfT), which will run from 22nd June 2014 until March 2017.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Under the new <strong>West Coast Main Line<\/strong> deal, which news watchers will recall was originally awarded to <strong>First Group<\/strong> before a legal dispute launched by Virgin Trains unearthed &#8220;<em>significant technical flaws<\/em>&#8221; in the bidding process, a combination of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> technology will be deployed on all 76 of Virgin&#8217;s <strong>Pendolino<\/strong> and <strong>Super Voyager<\/strong> trains.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s understood that <strong>Network Rail<\/strong> will also support this roll-out, which is apparently the &#8220;<em>first major intercity deployment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> technology on the UK rail network<\/em>&#8220;, by providing the necessary track-side infrastructure.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Patrick McCall, Virgin Trains Executive Co-Chairman, said: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>We\u2019re delighted to have reached a deal after some tough negotiations with the DfT. It puts the problems of 2012 firmly behind us, and shows the clear benefits of a well-run franchise system.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This deal is great news for passengers and taxpayers, with significant benefits for our customers as well as a big increase in the money we pay to government. We know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> is high on our customers\u2019 priorities and we\u2019re delighted that we\u2019re going to be able to offer them free and super-fast WiFi. Together with thousands of extra seats and plans for new services, this deal will mean big improvements for millions of Virgin Trains passengers<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The deal intends to build on the progress <strong>Virgin Trains<\/strong> has made since first taking over the West Coast franchise in 1997, although we doubt that will include cheaper rail fairs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Virgin Trains has today pledged to provide free &#8220;superfast&#8221;
