{"id":7024,"date":"2014-06-23T09:09:18","date_gmt":"2014-06-23T08:09:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=7024"},"modified":"2014-06-23T09:09:18","modified_gmt":"2014-06-23T08:09:18","slug":"devon-somerset-uk-struggle-match-broadband-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/06\/devon-somerset-uk-struggle-match-broadband-funding.html","title":{"rendered":"Devon and Somerset UK Struggle to Match Broadband Funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The joint \u00a394 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Connecting Devon and Somerset<\/a> project in England, which is currently rolling out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s superfast broadband (25Mbps+) network to at least 90% of local premises by the end of 2016, is seeking a delay and reduction in the additional funding allocated by the Government&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bduk\" target=\"_blank\">Broadband Delivery UK<\/a> (BDUK) office.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year BDUK announced the tentative allocation of another \u00a3250 million (aka &#8211; Superfast Extension Programme) to help lift the fixed-line superfast broadband coverage target from its original goal (reaching 90% of people in each local authority area by the end of 2015) to 95% by 2017 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/02\/broadband-delivery-uk-scheme-reveals-spending-plan-extra-gbp250m.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). Since then councils across the United Kingdom have been working to update and adapt their existing plans.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this extension the CDS scheme was allocated an additional <strong>\u00a322.75 million<\/strong>, which as usual needs to be matched by both the local authorities involved and their chosen supplier (this is most likely to end up being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> again). The extra funding would help CDS to achieve or at least get closer to their long-term goal of 100% superfast broadband coverage by 2020 (i.e. matching the EU&#8217;s Digital Agenda target).<\/p>\n<p>Like most local authorities the CDS scheme has been given until the <strong>end of June 2014<\/strong> to finalise their bid, but there have been a few bumps along the way. In particular some local councilors, such as the MP for Tiverton and Honiton (<strong>Neil Parish<\/strong>), have called for a cut in the funding amount (easier to match in the current economic climate) and a delay in order to give them more time to present their bid.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>A DCMS\/BDUK Spokesperson said (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.westernmorningnews.co.uk\/Broadband-funding-fears\/story-21273489-detail\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Western Morning News<\/a>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>It\u2019s understandable that they would take time to work up a proposal<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Problems like this are not altogether unexpected and we&#8217;ve previously reported on a couple of similar cases. The CDS scheme is also quite big and being bigger means more complicated to assess.
