{"id":7117,"date":"2014-07-02T09:06:26","date_gmt":"2014-07-02T08:06:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=7117"},"modified":"2014-07-02T09:21:55","modified_gmt":"2014-07-02T08:21:55","slug":"gigaclear-target-50000-uk-rural-homes-1gbps-fttp-broadband-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/07\/gigaclear-target-50000-uk-rural-homes-1gbps-fttp-broadband-2015.html","title":{"rendered":"Gigaclear Target 50000 UK Rural Homes for 1Gbps FTTP Broadband by 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rural-focused fibre optic (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) broadband ISP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/gigaclear\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Gigaclear<\/a> has secured private investment worth \u00a37.75 million to help fund the next phase of its growth and a roll-out of 1000Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Internet access into more areas, which could reach 15,000 premises by the end of 2015 and go much further in the future.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The new growth funding has apparently been secured from both new and existing investors. Some<strong> \u00a32.75m<\/strong> was raised in April 2014 via an <strong>Enterprise Investment Scheme<\/strong> (EIS), with another <strong>\u00a35m<\/strong> of the total coming from Neil Woodford&#8217;s new <strong>CF Woodford Equity Income Fund<\/strong> (i.e. Gigaclears first institutional investor). Neil Woodford has also been in the news recently due to concerns over investment collusion in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daisygroupplc.com\" target=\"_blank\">Daisy Group<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/06\/takeover-panel-probes-uk-daisy-group-investor-collusion.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>At present <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/gigaclear\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Gigaclear<\/a> owns and operates 8 rural fibre optic networks across <strong>Oxfordshire<\/strong> and <strong>Rutland<\/strong> in England, with another <strong>400 communities<\/strong> said to be demanding their help (most of these have been left neglected by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> with very slow sub-2Mbps connectivity). But it&#8217;s hard to scale-up in order to meet such demand and that&#8217;s where the new funding could prove crucial.<\/p>\n<p>Under the current plan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/gigaclear\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Gigaclear<\/a> aims to operate <strong>25 networks by the end of 2014<\/strong> (total coverage of around 10,000 rural homes) and 6 of those are already being built in <strong>Kent<\/strong> and <strong>Oxfordshire<\/strong>, with another batch anticipated to follow in <strong>Peterborough<\/strong> and <strong>Northamptonshire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Matthew Hare, CEO of Gigaclear, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>I am delighted by the continued strong support shown by our shareholders and by the faith our new private and institutional investors have placed in us. The demand for better broadband from homes and businesses in rural communities continues to rise. With every network we build, Gigaclear is able to show beyond doubt that we can build, operate and monitise new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> networks that deliver real returns for their users and for our shareholders. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>With fresh funding secured, we can now forge ahead with our plans to bring reliable, ultrafast and very cost effective broadband to the underserved and often forgotten rural communities across Britain.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But Gigaclear&#8217;s aspiration is already to go much further and there are hopes of being able to reach an impressive figure of <strong>50,000 premises<\/strong> by the end of 2015, which is certain to cost considerably more than currently tabled (some estimates put the figure at around \u00a3100m).<\/p>\n<p>However, achieving a figure of 50,000 in such a short space of time has already proven difficult for even some of the better funded and more established fibre optic developers to achieve, with most of those also being in urban areas where it&#8217;s usually a lot quicker to reach larger numbers of premises.<\/p>\n<p>Never the less we must applaud the excellent efforts Gigaclear are making and their move into the big league shows that a flexible demand-led approach in isolated rural areas really is starting to pay off for some operators, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> often still struggles to deliver even basic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">ADSL<\/a> Max connectivity into many of the same areas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rural-focused fibre optic (FTTP) broadband ISP Gigaclear has secured private investment worth \u00a37.75 million to help fund the next phase of its growth and a roll-out of 1000Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Internet access into more areas, which could reach 15,000 premises by the end of 2015 and go much further in the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[472,52,65,56,416],"class_list":["post-7117","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-business","tag-fibre-optic","tag-ftth","tag-fttp","tag-gigaclear"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.5 -
