{"id":7323,"date":"2014-08-01T10:33:29","date_gmt":"2014-08-01T09:33:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=7323"},"modified":"2014-08-01T10:36:05","modified_gmt":"2014-08-01T09:36:05","slug":"bt-uk-employees-open-arms-huge-gbp1-1bn-share-plan-payout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/08\/bt-uk-employees-open-arms-huge-gbp1-1bn-share-plan-payout.html","title":{"rendered":"BT UK Employees Open Arms for Huge GBP1.1bn Share Plan Pay Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some 23,000 of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s employees, specifically those that joined the operators five-year &#8220;<em>saveshare<\/em>&#8221; plan in 2009 under which they&#8217;ve saved between \u00a35 and \u00a3225 every month until now, look set to receive a pay-out in shares that will be worth an average of over \u00a349,000 each as the plan matures (assumes a saving of \u00a3124 per month was made).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The accrued monthly savings can now be used to buy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> shares for 61p each, which represents a 14p discount compared with the share price five years ago and a 327.5p discount compared to the share price of 388.5p when the financial markets closed last night. Most of those set to benefit from the \u00a31.1bn windfall are contact centre agents and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a>\u2019s telecoms engineers, the lucky devils.<\/p>\n<p>As usual with shares the actual gains that participants can make will depend upon how much they saved and what the share price is when they choose to sell. For example, some 7,000 participants chose to save the maximum of \u00a3225 a month and thus the shares they can buy are worth \u00a389,705 (a gain of \u00a375,620).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Gavin Patterson, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>I\u2019m delighted that so many BT people are sharing in the company\u2019s success through our saveshare plan. BT was facing tough times five years ago and this was reflected in the share price. We\u2019re in a much stronger place today and I would like to thank our people for the major part they\u2019ve played in the turnaround of the company over the past five years<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Granted this isn&#8217;t really telecoms or broadband specific news, although it&#8217;s interesting to note that in 2009 BT&#8217;s share price was &#8220;<em>at its lowest ever level &#8211; beneath 80 pence<\/em>&#8221; and that was partly due to their then somewhat stagnant position in the market (rivals were harnessing LLU and ADSL2+ broadband to eat into BT&#8217;s once dominant hold).<\/p>\n<p>Since then things have changed, not least thanks to the roll-out of soft-touch regulated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> and picking up all those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bduk\" target=\"_blank\">Broadband Delivery UK<\/a> contracts. BT TV and BTSport has also played a part in helping to retain and grow their customer base.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from an expected but small change to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> pricing in the imminent future, BT looks set to benefit via gentle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> regulation for at least a few more years.
