Most broadband ISP\u00a0consumers in the United Kingdom are probably familiar with major Internet router and modem kit manufacturers like NetGear,\u00a0Asus and so forth. But many probably won\u2019t be as familiar with the name AVM, which has recently become much better known thanks to their latest line of advanced but affordable ADSL<\/a> and VDSL (FTTC<\/a>) FRITZ!Box routers.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

AVM was founded during 1986 in Berlin (Germany) and has been busy growing its influence ever since. The company now claims to be one of the top two manufacturers of broadband devices in Europe and holds an impressive\u00a0market share of over 50% in Germany.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s latest broadband routers (e.g. FRITZ!Box 7390<\/strong> and 3390<\/strong>) seem to have also peaked a lot of interest among the UK\u2019s own enthusiast market, which is largely thanks to the mass of advanced features that AVM typically crams into\u00a0their kit and all at a price that\u2019s often lower than you\u2019d expect for such a device.<\/p>\n

As a result AVM is growing somewhat of a following in the UK, especially among more advanced users who like their routers to be capable of considerably more than the norm. Naturally we wanted to find out more about AVM\u2019s plans, their thoughts on the UK\u2019s broadband market, support for the 802.11ac wifi<\/a> standard and their expectations for BT<\/a>\u2019s adoption of VDSL vectoring technology to help boost FTTC<\/a> (VDSL) broadband speeds.<\/p>\n

In order to do this ISPreview.co.uk has made contact with AVM\u2019s Country Sale Manager, Matthew Tyler<\/strong>, who was happy to join us in a quick interview session. Tyler is originally from the USA but has been based in Berlin with AVM now for over 10 years.<\/p>\n

The AVM Interview<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Q1. Like many country\u2019s it\u2019s widely expected that BT<\/a>\u2019s national telecoms network in the UK will shortly begin to roll-out vectoring technology on FTTC<\/a>\/VDSL lines. We understand that AVM\u2019s latest 7490 router supports this and some of your older models have since been updated to include vectoring via the FRITZ!OS 6.0 firmware. What sort of challenges did you face in adding vectoring and what kind of performance benefits can customers expect to see on supported lines?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

Customers getting vectoring technology (ITU-T G.993.5 VDSL2<\/a> G.Vector) enabled on there FTTC lines will see performance benefits both upstream and downstream through a reduction of electromagnetic interference (cross talk) between adjacent lines. This provides for significantly higher data rates of up to 100 Mbit\/s downstream and 20 Mbit\/s up [ISPr EDITORS NOTE:\u00a0This may\u00a0not strictly represent UK lines].<\/p>\n

\"avm_vdsl_vectoring_pilot\"<\/p>\n

The challenge has been to assure performances are improved over all network topographies and to assure interoperability across all DSLAMs. We\u2019ve worked closely with our technology partners on DSLAM side and chip manufacturers to developing vectoring on all of our VDSL routers and our DSL<\/a> engineers were able to demonstrate AVM’s vectoring capabilities very early at all the international plug fests and exhibitions.<\/p>\n

EU telecom testing has included visits to GEA-FTTC BT<\/a> labs to assure that the FRITZ!Boxes are GEA FTTC and vectoring compliant in the UK.\u00a0More on the topic of the international vectoring interop plugfest at the University of New Hampshire can be found here<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q2. It seems like the Gigabit capable 802.11ac wifi<\/a> standard (supported by AVMs 7490) has only been out for a short period and already people are talking about the next upgrade, 802.11ac-2013. This is promising speeds of 7Gbps by making better use of the 5GHz frequency band (i.e. adding channel bandwidths of 160MHz with both contiguous and non-contiguous 160MHz channels for flexible channel assignment).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Can you tell us, has AVM experimented with this new standard, what are your thoughts on it and when might we see the first 802.11ac-2013 product from AVM?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, 11ac is still relatively newly accepted standard. Our focus is on helping our customers have the most rewarding experience with this new advance. While the smart devices and notebook manufactures have begun to integrate 11ac on their newest devices, we have introduced Wi-Fi 11ac USB sticks and Wi-Fi 11ac Repeaters to compliment connectivity in existing networks.<\/p>\n

AVM is a full member of the Wi-Fi Alliance and are dedicated to fast implementation of on-going Wi-Fi innovations. The benefit to supporting IEEE Wi-Fi standards assures long-term compatibility for all standards.<\/p>\n

While Wi-Fi 11ac 2013 (called 802.11ac Wave2 within the Wi-Fi Alliance) is an industry development that we are closely following, our focus continues to be on the successful deployment of 11ac (wave 1) in the residential home. AVM Wi-Fi Engineers recognise the significance of Wave2 as an exciting technological advance and have clear plans to stay on track with it’s development in the FRITZ!Box.<\/p>\n

Continuous advancement in innovation are AVM trademarks. The close working relationships that AVM has to the chip manufactures and the Wi-Fi Alliance help us to plan when and how these new Wi-Fi technologies should be most effectively launched in the existing market.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n


\nQ3. It\u2019s been noted that the FRITZ!Box 3390 and other models combine both wifi<\/a> bands (5GHz and 2.4GHz) into a single SSID instead of two separate ones as some other routers do (though rivals do allow the bands to be renamed to the same SSI). Some people find that this can make it tedious to connect on the specific band you want. Why has AVM adopted this approach?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

The FRITZ!Box configuration has two modes, a \u2018Standard\u2019 and \u2018Advanced\u2019 view. Many smart devices have Wi-Fi clients, which are unable to display band information, just SSIDs. In the Standard mode, our intentions are to present the typical user with a simple menu interface, reducing the number of variables and technical jargon. An example of this is found in the Wi-Fi configuration menu – one SSID is less complex for many customers, especially without knowing what an \u2018SSID\u2019 is. However, the Advanced view can be activated, to access the advanced functions and configurations, including Wi-Fi radio network settings to define unique SSIDS for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q4. We note that AVM are planning to introduce a new router (model 4080) that will be specifically designed for ultrafast 1000Mbps fibre optic networks (FTTH<\/a> etc.). Can you tell us what sort of features are unique to this model in order to set it aside from your other high-end routers (e.g. 7490) and thus be better able to support truly fibre optic lines?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

A new dual core processor, gigabit WAN port, and 4×4 MIMO 11ac Wi-Fi will be used in the FRITZ!Box 4080 to even better manage the gigabit speed coming from fibre lines into the home. This turbo-charged router is designed with plenty of overhead for the demands of continuous gigabit bandwidth communications for the growing multiple-platform video streaming and gaming applications. The other key difference to the 7490 is the 4080\u2019s sleek, new design.<\/p>\n

\"fritzbox<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q5. What kind of plans do you have for future software improvements, such as perhaps via FRITZ!OS 7.0 firmware and or upgrades for OS 6.0?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

FRITZ!OS Update preview: There will be a new security overview for more control and transparency with STARTTLS push mail notifications of all logins, new FRITZ!OS updates and an open port check. Also the FRITZ!NAS gets an overhaul for better usability with tablets and smartphones on the network. FRITZ!NAS users will benefit from an integrated HTML Player and more media management features.<\/p>\n

The FRITZ!Box is a media hub to distribute media storage throughout the network, and the FRITZ!Fon cordless DECT handset is the perfect remote control to play music, video and photos and choose the UPnP and DLNA device. You can also use the \u2018FRITZ!App Media\u2019 to turn your android smart device into a multimedia remote control. It\u2019s one of a series of useful Apps we\u2019ve developed for Apple and Android devices.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q6. Aside from ever faster and more reliable wifi connectivity, what other headline hardware features are AVM looking at for future routers?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

In the busy engineering lab, our engineers are allowed ample room for experimentation. Studies suggest that online Video makes up to 84% of Internet traffic, so with HD, UHD, and the advent of 4K video and games, there will be continued demand for ever more router performance and throughput. Including SAT-IP in our FRITZ!OS will allow smartphones and tablets to share IP-TV in the household – simultanously and everywhere. AVM has also developed an 11ac dual band Wi-Fi repeater which also distributes classical DVB-C signal into the local network. We are also looking at applications for DECT ULE (Ultra Low Engery) communications. Our goal is to give the residential market a reliable and flexible gateway ready for the Gigabit Generation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q7. It\u2019s well known that the supply of IPv4 (IP) Internet addresses to Europe and the United Kingdom is running out. In your opinion, what will this mean for UK based broadband providers; especially those that delay adapting with IPv6 for as long as possible?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

Already, there are ISPs whose IPv4 addresses are no longer sufficient for the existing customers. The customers get only an IPv4 connection via Carrier Grade NAT. This leads to many problems, such as the IPv4 availability to services offered themselves or peer-to-peer services. IPv6 is the only reasonable solution to this and is being rolled out from the DS lite \/ CGN ISPs – but for this to work, the remote site must be reachable over IPv6. This means that DS lite customers will not be reachable by their IPv4-only friends – and sooner or later this will lead to customer complaints.<\/p>\n

AVM has one of the largest native IPv6 customers in Europe, XS4all in the Netherlands, who launched IPv6 in Autumn 2011 and now have over 100,000 IPv6 customers online. AVM reacted very early to achieve all the necessary prerequisites for a successful IPv6 deployment with FRITZ!Box, and indeed we were one of the world\u2019s first broadband routers with full IPv6 support for small networks.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q8. Finally, there\u2019s a big debate going on in many European countries concerning the best infrastructure solutions for the future. Many incumbent operators, such as BT, prefer the cheaper and quicker deployment of slower speed hybrid-fibre (FTTC\/VDSL) solutions. Meanwhile others want significantly more investment to me made into full ultrafast fibre optic (FTTH<\/a>\/P\/B) connectivity that would be fairly future proof but take a long time to deploy. What do you think is the best way forward?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

From my humble perspective, FTTH<\/a> is the long-term goal, but for the next ten years, it will be a mixture of fibre, cable and VDSL. What to deploy today depends a lot on the existing (copper) infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Building codes and property laws also can play a big role in the cost for FTTH deployment. For today, I think FTTC (VDSL) is a perfectly reasonable and competitive solution for the UK and many EU markets, especially with the deployment of the above mentioned vectoring technology to provide over 100 Mbit\/sec bandwidth access. For white spots, LTE could be used to fill in odd gaps in the isolated countryside with comparatively high-speed access.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
