{"id":7619,"date":"2014-09-18T08:41:35","date_gmt":"2014-09-18T07:41:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=7619"},"modified":"2014-09-18T08:41:42","modified_gmt":"2014-09-18T07:41:42","slug":"virgin-atlantics-aircraft-get-70mbps-flight-broadband","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/09\/virgin-atlantics-aircraft-get-70mbps-flight-broadband.html","title":{"rendered":"Virgin Atlantic&#8217;s EU Aircraft to Get 70Mbps In-Flight Broadband"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Travellers looking to fly with Virgin Atlantic may be pleased to learn that Richard Branson&#8217;s airline has become the first European carrier to deploy Gogo&#8217;s new in-flight connectivity technology (2Ku), which uses a mix of ground and space (<a class=\"shortlink shortlink-119 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"satellite\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_satellite.php\">satellite<\/a>) based stations to deliver on-board Internet access speeds of up to 70Mbps over a local <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-124 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"wifi\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_wireless.php\">WiFi<\/a> network.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The new service is scheduled to be launched in the <strong>middle of 2015<\/strong> and will make us of the latest advances in <strong>Ku-band<\/strong> <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-119 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"satellite\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_satellite.php\">satellite<\/a> antennas, which are smaller, more efficient and like other Ku-band services operate in the 12\u201318GHz portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (microwave). In Europe the Ku band is used from 10.7 to 12.75GHz.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nSBVAYzkwNk\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Apparently future upgrades to the service, which could make use of spot-beam satellites, may be able to deliver shared capacity speeds of <strong>up to 100Mbps<\/strong> per flight. Suffice to say that this would be a huge improvement over the handful of Megabits that current solutions deliver, which once shared can quickly become more akin to an old fashioned <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-114 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/dialup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"dialup\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_dialup.php\">dialup<\/a> service.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Reuben Arnold, Brand Director at Virgin Atlantic, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>We&#8217;re always looking at ways to enhance the on board experience for our customers and expanding in-flight connectivity across our fleet is just one of the ways in which we are doing this.
