As a result the news that Sky are about to conduct a mobile service &#8220;<em>trial<\/em>&#8221; with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> is no surprise, but it is big news.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Sky needs a <strong>Mobile Virtual Network Operator<\/strong> (MVNO) partnership to call its own because all of their primary rivals, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a>, have already teamed up with various mobile operators. Meanwhile next year will see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> re-enter the mobile market through their new deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> and the Post Office are doing the same (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/07\/uk-post-office-confirms-plan-launch-mobile-network.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). Quite simply, Sky can&#8217;t afford to be left out as that might put pressure on their churn rate (customer bleed).<\/p>\n<p>Analysts have long speculated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> would be a logical partner for Sky given their existing TV content and management relationships, not to mention <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a>&#8217;s own desire to counter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s move into the mobile sector. Vodafone might also feel a little sore after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> dumped them for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> and you know what they say, revenge is a dish best served.. by teaming up with somebody else in order to punch BT&#8217;s lights out (well it&#8217;s probably something like that).<\/p>\n<p>Never the less Sky has spent most of the year dodging such speculation and refusing to commit to a particular course, yet all that might finally be coming to an end. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2014\/10\/31\/sky-mvno-rumours\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Register<\/a> notes that Sky has contacted <strong>200,000 customers<\/strong> to ask if they would like to take part in a mobile trial via Vodafone&#8217;s network, which is rather a lot of people to ask, unless it\u2019s more than just a trial.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>A Spokesperson for BSkyB said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>We\u2019ve teamed up with Vodafone to launch some tactical promotional offers to our customer bases to encourage sampling of our respective products and services<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At this point it&#8217;s surprising to see Sky continuing to play the coy press agent card, surely the cat is now well and truly out of the bag (all 200,000 of them)?
