It’s been three years since Hyperoptic<\/a> stepped out from the ashes of BE Broadband to became one of the first ISPs to build an ultrafast (1000Mbps) Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTP<\/a>) broadband network for homes in London. Some doubted their prospects, but the gamble paid off and now the ISPs boss, Dana Pressman Tobak, has stopped back at ISPreview.co.uk to give us an update.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Hyperoptic<\/a> was founded by some of BE Broadband’s (aka – BE Unlimited) original management team, which is an ISP that initially became known for helping to pioneer some of the first non-BT<\/a> \/ unbundled (LLU) ADSL2+ based broadband lines in the United Kingdom. O2<\/a> eventually scooped ‘BE’ up for just \u00a350m<\/strong> in 2006 and took the provider mass-market in 2007, although related customers were last year gobbled\u00a0by Sky Broadband<\/a> (BSkyB) for around \u00a3180m<\/strong> (here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

But BEs pioneering team didn’t vanish after the\u00a02006 O2<\/a> sale\u00a0and they eventually turned up again with the September 2011 launch of Hyperoptic<\/a> (check out our original interview<\/a>), which unlike BE was strictly focused upon delivering an ultrafast pure fibre optic connection to homes in dense urban areas (specifically large Multi-Dwelling Units (MDU) and modest sized apartment blocks).<\/p>\n

At first Hyperoptic’s focus was restricted to parts of London where demand was strongest and by early 2013 they’d managed to make the service available to 20,000 premises<\/strong>, complete with a respectable uptake figure of around 20%. Shortly after that the ISP won a major \u00a350m<\/strong> investment from Quantum Strategic Partners <\/strong>(here<\/a>) and since then their service has started to expand into 11 new cities, with around 75,000 premises<\/strong> now covered and a goal of reaching 500,000<\/strong> by 2018<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The pace of change is eye watering and ISPreview.co.uk understands that Hyperoptic, which told us that they now employ 170 staff<\/strong>, are also conducting a test in Rotherhithe<\/strong> (South East London) to trial the viability of connecting significantly smaller buildings. If successful this could see Hyperoptic’s model being adapted to reach an even\u00a0wider proportion of urban slow-spots; at present the smallest building they can serve is China Wharf<\/strong>, which has only 18 homes \/ units.<\/p>\n

Naturally ISPreview.co.uk was keen to get a quick update from Hyperoptic on their current situation, opinions and future plans. Luckily for us the ISPs Managing Director, Dana Pressman Tobak, was kind enough to help jot down a few quick answers to our questions.<\/p>\n

The Interview<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

1. Can you list the apartment \/ high-rise buildings where Hyperoptic\u2019s FTTB service is currently available?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

In October 2014 we announced that we would soon reach more than 75,000 homes, spanning 480 sites. Hyperoptic is live in London, Cardiff and Bristol; Reading, Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds will follow shortly and work is underway to bring gigabit services to Glasgow, Sheffield, Birmingham, Nottingham and Newcastle.<\/p>\n

2. What\u2019s the biggest building you\u2019ve been able to connect so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

To date, the biggest development we\u2019ve connected is East Village, the former Athletes\u2019 Village in Stratford, which has nearly 3,000 homes. Given our full fibre approach, there are no limitations as to how large a site can be.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/p>\n

3. At present Hyperoptic tend to focus on apartment blocks of 80 or more dwellings but you\u2019ve also spoken about connecting smaller buildings in the future. Just how small do you think is feasible for your future model and what needs to change in order to make that possible?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

As the business grows, we are able to connect smaller developments as well. We started by targeting developments with 80 units; this has now fallen to 50. In fact, the smallest building we have gone into is China Wharf, which has only 18 homes.<\/p>\n

Our aim is to connect as many buildings as possible and we are always investigating different technical approaches to make connecting smaller sites viable. When we are considering smaller buildings, we look for strong registered interest from the residents, or an interest in taking the service for the entire building.<\/p>\n

We are currently focusing on Rotherhithe as a test area for viability of connecting smaller buildings. Based on success there, we can roll that out to other areas in urban not-spots.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

4. What\u2019s the situation today in terms of total homes passed, total buildings connected and uptake (%)?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

As outlined above, we will soon reach 75,000 homes and we are continuing to hit our goals for uptake. We are very excited and encouraged with the level of uptake we are seeing in our sites \u2013 the residents understand and appreciate the value of symmetrical true fibre broadband and are our biggest champions in getting our service installed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

5. Hyperoptic currently aims to pass 80,000 homes in as many as 10 new UK cities by the end of 2014 and in the longer term there\u2019s a goal of 500,000 homes by 2018. Can you tell us how you go about deciding which cities to target next?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

We have already announced eleven new cities this year and are close to reaching 80,000 homes. Potential hyper-cities are prioritised based on consumer demand and overall suitability for our approach. We strongly encourage hyper-fans to register interest no matter which city they live in \u2013 we listen.<\/p>\n

Recently there has been a huge amount of news about the rise of the gigabit cities, which has been great for educating the market. Consumers and businesses are realising that there is a better way \u2013 so they are rallying behind us, allowing us to fast track our rollout.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

6. How does Hyperoptic actually get its fibre optic cable to these buildings, do you use BT<\/a>\u2019s cable ducts (PIA), dig your own trenches \/ street works or work with other third party Dark Fibre providers to deliver the service. Please can you tell us a little more about this and the processes involved?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

One of our USPs is that we have a dedicated network, which means that we have much more control over our service and consumer experience. We do not use BT<\/a>\u2019s PIA product. We work with multiple fibre providers and aim to use existing infrastructure to limit disruption to the local environment during installation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

7. During May 2013 you successfully secured a significant new investment worth \u00a350 million from private investment firm Quantum Strategic Partners Ltd. What will this extra support allow you to do that you might have struggled to achieve before?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

This investment has enabled us to accelerate our expansion plans. We are now in a position where we can scale our efforts and increase our capabilities \u2013 we now employ 170 staff across four sites.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve expanded our network acquisition team, our installation team, and our customer service team. With the additional funding, we can bring 1 Gig to more people; ensure high quality installations, and a superlative customer experience. We know that to grow a successful ISP that the customer support and service has to be second-to-none.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

8. Now…about those long-held plans for a TV (IPTV) product :)?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re still evaluating customer demand for a bundled TV product. Given the number of independent options currently available for streaming and on demand services, hyper-fast fibre broadband is the driver and enabler of future TV services \u2013 rather than the other way around.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

9. So far Hyperoptic has tended to speak mostly about its focus on residential services but you\u2019ve also branched out into offering a business solution. This includes via the government\u2019s Connection Vouchers Scheme that should eventually offer grants worth up to \u00a33,000 to help businesses in 22 UK cities install a superfast broadband connection. Is it harder to tailor your solution to business requirements and how many firms have you helped to connect?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

The additional funding from Government has had a positive impact by raising awareness amongst SMEs that fibre should be part of their future proofing.<\/p>\n

Our solution works well for smaller business that want a full fibre connection without paying the prices associated with dedicated lines. We have already connected a number of businesses across our anticipated product set and will be announcing our business product portfolio later in the year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

10. Most independent fibre optic ISPs tend to struggle against competition from the incumbent, BT, especially now that they\u2019re gobbling up pretty much all of the government\u2019s Broadband Delivery UK<\/a> (BDUK) budget. Do you have concerns about the current BDUK process and or have you faced any problems with BT, which is also attempting to deploy a similar FTTC<\/a>\/P\/B solution in many of the same London areas as Hyperoptic?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

We have not competed in the rural BDUK process as we focus on slow spots in urban areas. While I know and sympathise with my compatriots in the rural FTTH<\/a> business, I cannot comment on the challenges they face or the BDUK process.<\/p>\n

Of course BT has a \u2018fibre\u2019 solution, but it\u2019s not 1 Gig and it\u2019s not symmetric. We are the leading provider of Fibre-to-the-Building and our experience and expertise is unmatched. Residents in Hyperoptic-enabled buildings can get a full fibre experience and if they have a faceplate, they can be live within minutes of ordering. We take orders online as well as by phone and have over a 95% customer satisfaction rating.<\/p>\n

We have strong relationships with developers and freeholders who appreciate the hassle free experience their residents get with Hyperoptic.<\/p>\n

Hyperoptic overcomes problems and welcomes the opportunity to compete.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

11. Finally, can you share any fun statistics about your broadband network and usage (e.g. total data transferred per month, average download speed across all connections, what is your most popular package etc.)?<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 100 Meg + phone is our most popular package
\n\u2022 Our average peak usage per customer is 750Kbps \u2013 and growing every month
\n\u2022 After ordering service with a pre-existing installation plate, customers can be live within 15 minutes<\/p>\n

ISPr Editors Note:<\/span> We were curious about the ‘average peak usage per customer’ figure, which on the surface seems to be much lower than you’d expect from an ISP offering packages of up to 1000Mbps, and so queried exactly what it represented. The answer from Hyperoptic is below:<\/em><\/p>\n

This figure represents the total usage at peak time divided by the total number of customers whether active or not. This is a fairly standard industry measurement although most don\u2019t publish their figures.<\/p>\n

Things to consider:<\/p>\n

* When online, one is rarely using your full bandwidth, for example reading emails, webpages, filling out a form are all things that would require no network traffic. The network is utilised only when sending, downloading, or streaming.
\n* Not everyone uses their connection at the same time. Even at peak only a portion of people are online at any one time<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

At Be [BE Broadband] for example our average peak was around 200 Kbps. During our initial phase this number was 300 Kbps. The growth indicates that people are using their connections more and making use of the great bandwidth available \u2013 we change our online habits when bandwidth is not a limiting factor.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/p>\n

Unfortunately that concludes our interview with Dana\u00a0and we’d like to thank Hyperoptic for agreeing to answer our questions, although it did take a little longer to get the replies than we first anticipated ;). In any case we’ll probably stop back with Hyperoptic in 2017\/18 to see how their plans to reach 500,000 premises are going.<\/p>\n

But until then the ISP has been kind enough to furnish us with a list of the buildings where their service has already\u00a0become available. It’s quite a long list and hence has its own page.<\/p>\n
