{"id":8399,"date":"2015-01-05T08:10:34","date_gmt":"2015-01-05T08:10:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=8399"},"modified":"2015-01-05T08:17:14","modified_gmt":"2015-01-05T08:17:14","slug":"new-24tbps-arctic-fibre-optic-subsea-cable-link-united-kingdom-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/01\/new-24tbps-arctic-fibre-optic-subsea-cable-link-united-kingdom-japan.html","title":{"rendered":"New 24Tbps Arctic Fibre Optic Subsea Cable to Link United Kingdom with Japan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After years of planning, a new undersea fibre optic cable link called <a href=\"http:\/\/arcticfibre.com\" target=\"_blank\">Arctic Fibre<\/a>, which will run from Japan to the United Kingdom (15,700km) and deliver low latency (154ms) data speeds of 24Tbps (Terabits per second), has finally begun the slow process of construction.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>\u00a3556 million<\/strong> ($850m) project was first revealed back in 2012 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/03\/first-arctic-submarine-fibre-optic-undersea-cable-to-boost-uk-internet.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>) and will compliment\u00a0several\u00a0similar submarine fibre optic network builds. Artic Fibre, which should reach land on our side of the map at both Cork in southern <strong>Ireland<\/strong> and Highbridge in south west <strong>England<\/strong>, will also improve connectivity to <strong>Alaska<\/strong>, <strong>Canada<\/strong> and the <strong>USA<\/strong>. The cable will then come aground on the other side of the map at Ajigaura and Tomakomai in <strong>Japan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Until recently some of those set to be benefit from the project, specifically the remote Canadian and Alaskan communities, had to rely on slow <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-119 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"satellite\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_satellite.php\">Satellite<\/a> solutions for their Internet connectivity.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2015-article-illustrations\/arctic_fibre_map.gif\" alt=\"arctic_fibre_map\" \/><\/div>\n<p>The network itself will use a three fibre pair cable with a design capacity of 80 wavelengths at 100Gbps (Gigabits per second). Apparently this will deliver two express fibre pairs from Japan to London, total capacity 24Tbps, with one local fibre pair having 5Tbps capacity. The express pairs will not land at the intermediate landing stations, which is intentional so as to enhance network reliability and deliver the low latency.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">IEEE<\/a>, the cable&#8217;s final route should be completely plotted by this summer and cable ships moving at an average of <strong>2km per hour<\/strong> will then plough a trench to lay the main cable.
