{"id":8478,"date":"2015-01-16T11:11:50","date_gmt":"2015-01-16T11:11:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=8478"},"modified":"2015-01-16T11:13:21","modified_gmt":"2015-01-16T11:13:21","slug":"ofcom-open-5g-mobile-broadband-consultation-spectrum-6ghz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/01\/ofcom-open-5g-mobile-broadband-consultation-spectrum-6ghz.html","title":{"rendered":"Ofcom Open 5G Mobile Broadband Consultation on Spectrum Above 6GHz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK telecoms regulator has started a new consultation that seeks feedback on whether radio spectrum bands above 6GHz could be used for the future 5th generation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a>) of ultrafast Mobile Broadband connectivity, which many predict will be able to offer peak \/ shared performance of up to or beyond 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) by around 2020.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to note that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a>, not unlike today&#8217;s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> networks, should also be able to operate in various different low and high frequency radio spectrum bands. Lower frequency bands (e.g. 800MHz) travel further and penetrate better through walls, but their ability to carry lots of data is limited. However, in order to achieve the top performance, it&#8217;s likely that higher frequency spectrum, such as <strong>6GHz<\/strong> and above, would be needed.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly higher frequencies like this offer a significantly shorter range and struggle to penetrate through walls, although a combination of millimeter wave frequency bands and special transmitters might enable the use of higher frequencies over greater distances (we can\u2019t help but wonder how expensive and complex this might be to deploy).<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s still a lot of R&amp;D required in order to both prove the above and make it commercially viable. So far most of the demos we&#8217;ve seen (examples <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/10\/samsung-tests-next-gen-5g-mobile-broadband-speeds-7-5gbps.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/05\/ericsson-trial-possible-10gbps-5g-mobile-broadband-network-japan.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>) tend to have been conducted in the <strong>15GHz<\/strong> to <strong>28GHz<\/strong> bands, while other operators have suggested frequency bands of up to <strong>60GHz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s problem is that most of the available lower frequency bands are already allocated and bands above 6GHz, where there&#8217;s a little bit more choice, are similarly used by a wide range of services that benefit citizens, consumers and other sectors (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">satellite<\/a> comms, space \/ science research, military, fixed wireless broadband backhaul capacity etc.). In other words, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> has a tough job ahead.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> Statement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The exact nature of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> is not yet defined, but to lay the foundations for its future introduction Ofcom needs to understand how it might use spectrum.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>5G is likely to provide much faster mobile broadband speeds than the current generation of mobile technology and the use of large blocks of spectrum is likely to be important to achieve the fastest speeds.
