{"id":8551,"date":"2015-01-27T09:53:47","date_gmt":"2015-01-27T09:53:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=8551"},"modified":"2015-01-27T09:57:40","modified_gmt":"2015-01-27T09:57:40","slug":"progress-tackling-warwickshires-slow-exchange-broadband-lines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/01\/progress-tackling-warwickshires-slow-exchange-broadband-lines.html","title":{"rendered":"Progress in Tackling Warwickshire&#8217;s Slow Exchange Only Broadband Lines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bduk\" target=\"_blank\">Broadband Delivery UK<\/a> programme is increasingly starting to tackle the historic curse of BTOpenreach&#8217;s pure copper Exchange Only Lines (EOL) and the latest example of this comes from several remote rural villages in the English county of Warwickshire.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In an EOL setup the copper phone line for a home or business is connected directly to a telephone exchange and does not go through a local Street Cabinet. Sadly EOLs are common in rural as well as some urban areas, indeed 91% of postcodes in the <strong>City of London<\/strong> have at least one EOL (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/12\/hyperoptic-study-eu-city-broadband-speeds-criticises-slow-london-uk.html\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom&#8217;s data<\/a>) and these often connect into larger buildings. Affected locals end up being stuck on slower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">ADSL<\/a> links.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately upgrading EOLs can be very expensive because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> needs to re-do part of the local infrastructure and build new Street Cabinets from scratch, which is a lot more work than their usual approach of simply upgrading existing cabinets with a new &#8216;up to&#8217; 80Mbps capable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> twin.<\/p>\n<p>In the future it&#8217;s possible that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/vdsl\">VDSL2<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>) based forms of <strong>Fibre-to-the-Basement<\/strong> (FTTB) and <strong>Fibre-to-the-Remote-Node<\/strong> (FTTrN) may provide for a cheaper fix, but those are still going through trials.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime local BDUK schemes, such as the state aid supported <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cswbroadband.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>CSW Broadband<\/strong><\/a> programme for <strong>Warwickshire<\/strong>, are finally starting to tackle the problem in small doses through the more expensive <strong>Network Rearrangement<\/strong> approach.<\/p>\n<p>The latest to benefit include around 150 premises in the remote rural village of <strong>Alderminster<\/strong> and 260 in <strong>Harbury<\/strong>, both of which are in the Stratford-on-Avon district. The effort has involved months of planning and work, including the installation of hundreds of metres of new cable as well as new roadside street cabinets in each village.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Alan Cockburn, Deputy Leader of Warwickshire County Council, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>It\u2019s the first time during the roll-out of CSW Broadband that we\u2019ve enabled faster fibre broadband to homes and businesses whose lines are connected directly to the local telephone exchange rather than passing through a green cabinet that can be upgraded with a fibre broadband connection.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This is great news for the residents and businesses in Harbury and Alderminster as they can now order faster fibre broadband from their chosen service provider.
