{"id":864,"date":"2012-05-16T13:57:05","date_gmt":"2012-05-16T12:57:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=864"},"modified":"2012-05-16T13:57:05","modified_gmt":"2012-05-16T12:57:05","slug":"japanese-scientists-deliver-faster-wifi-using-the-t-rays-radio-spectrum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/05\/japanese-scientists-deliver-faster-wifi-using-the-t-rays-radio-spectrum.html","title":{"rendered":"Japanese Scientists Deliver Faster WiFi Using the T-rays Radio Spectrum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group of <strong>Japanese scientists<\/strong> working out of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.titech.ac.jp\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tokyo Institute of Technology<\/a> (TIT) have managed to push wireless (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">wifi<\/a>) data rates of between <strong>2-3Gbps<\/strong> (Gigabits per second) over the unregulated <strong>T-rays<\/strong> band of the electromagnetic radio spectrum (<em>300-3000GHz<\/em>).<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThe development, which could one day help to manage the increasing problem of congestion in wireless networks, was achieved by using <strong>Terahertz-Oscillating Resonant Tunnelling Diodes<\/strong> (RTDs). According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bbc\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a>, this could in theory be developed to support <strong>data rates of up to 100Gbps<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/digital-library.theiet.org\/getabs\/servlet\/GetabsServlet?prog=normal&amp;id=ELLEAK000048000010000582000001&amp;idtype=cvips&amp;gifs=yes&amp;ref=no\" target=\"_blank\">IET Digital Library Letter<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Direct intensity modulation and wireless data transmission characteristics of terahertz-oscillating resonant tunnelling diodes (RTDs) is reported. A direct intensity modulation of the RTD oscillators was demonstrated, and the frequency response was measured. It was found that the 3 dB cutoff modulation frequency was limited by the parasitic elements of the external circuit, and increased up to 4.5 GHz by reducing such parasitic elements.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Wireless data transmission by direct amplitude shift keying was demonstrated using an RTD oscillating at 542 GHz with cutoff frequency of 1.1 GHz. The BERs for bit rates of 2 and 3 Gbit\/s were found to be 2\u00d710\u22128 and 3\u00d710\u22125, respectively.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Delivering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">wifi<\/a> over the terahertz band would certainly have some advantages as T-rays are known to be <strong>very good at penetrating materials<\/strong>, much like X-rays but without the same level of damaging effects. But they do have problems and operating at such <strong>high frequencies limits their coverage<\/strong>, which only really makes them effective for home\/local style networking.<\/p>\n<p>In any case the commercialisation of a T-rays based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">wifi<\/a> solution is still just a pipe dream and we probably won&#8217;t be seeing any such solutions on the market for quite a few years to come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A group of Japanese scientists working out of the Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT) have managed to push wireless (wifi) data rates of between 2-3Gbps (Gigabits per second) over the unregulated T-rays band of the electromagnetic radio spectrum (300-3000GHz).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[477,476],"class_list":["post-864","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-science","tag-wifi"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
